I read the 1%-5% on wikipedia so not the best source. They link to this article as a citation. It quotes an earlier test with 5.1% loss over a three week period in Indian mobile networks for 59 million messages. Their own test shows 3.89% loss with time of day/week having little effect on the figure. I’ve not read it too closely so I might be interpreting it poorly.
