I suppose the most non-violent response would be to carry an airhorn to blast back at them. Arguably less legal would be to have a 2 liter bottle of some awful sticky soda on hand and spray them with it. Faygo Redpop would probably do the trick.

Not for nothing but Savannah was spared because the people who ran the city knew when it was time to throw in the towel and nervously welcomed Sherman’s troops with drinks and hospitality rather than armed hostilities.
