New Dell laptops "smell of cat piss"

Would fit right in our household, with the cranky 15 year old eunuch cat whose preferred mode of communication is to piss on the 8 year old’s bed. Maybe I should buy one of these and let the old cat know there is a new, stronger pisser in town.

Dell consumer machines - bit dodgy.
Dell business machines - generally quite good (except the cheapy Vostro ones, they’re a pain to open up).

It’s not like this is the first time a computer has been associated with streaming media involving cats.

This isn’t the series of tubes I had in mind.

Even though China is capable of manufacturing products to a high degree of accuracy, their raw materials are a random mix of contaminated or completely bogus chemicals. It’s not unusual to read comments on Amazon like “This product smells like burning soap and it gave me blisters.”

CLamb - If you have male cats, and they think it smells like some other cat’s pee, they’ll let you know.

But it would be interesting to know what plasticizers or other chemicals are making the smell; that might lead to an improvement in the pet-smell-cleanup liquids you get at the pet store.

Is it really just a coincidence that this is following so closely on Apple’s decision to name OS X 10.8 “Mavericks” rather than using the name of another big cat?

Well, yes, of course it is.

Yeah, I suspect it’s not that the smell is pleasant, but that people associate the smell of off-gassing solvents with having a nice new car.

It sounds like this is revenge for all the funny cat pictures on the internet. Take that silly human!

Cat piss men need employment too.

It is not a bug, it is a feature.

So… if it smells… of cat piss… it’s made of meth?

And therefore?

A witch! A witch!

“Dell Engineering and our suppliers have been analyzing a captured unit and are close to a root cause.”

Yeah, Catch-Spay-Release is gonna solve it.

I used to barf every time I travelled in my gran’s MKII Escort for the same reason. Some horrible chemical that they made 70s vinyl car seats out of.

Ahem…Thanks for the help, Senthil.

Or Cat-a-pi-lism.

this reminds me of the old Apple G3 iBooks. the keyboards would acquire a STRONG body odor smell after a few years. like a neglected gym locker.

I’m actually kind of nostalgic for the sweet, musty odor of a particular era of electronics, like the Colecovision. It’s something particular used in the plastic that they stopped using eventually, I think. There’s an opportunity there for someone who figures out how to market the stuff.

My first search result was at pissedconsumer.com
…which is not a website dedicated to product complaints of a urine-related nature.
