NorCal neighbors complain as total jerk cements large swastika in his front yard

No in that novel, spacing was a one size fits all solution which was applied in some horrifying ways. This is in the context of a largely ungoverned lunar penal colony.

That is a very large topic, but for starters:

There are many answers to that question. Reparation and rehabilitation are usually the preferred methods though.

Usually the next commune would be part of the same federation and would be told as soon as they are expelled, should that be their punishment (think more of french communes rather than a hippy commune)

Kipling used the symbol on his books prior to the nazi era. Presumably a nod to his appreciation of it’s meaning within the Hindu tradition. He removed it once it was adopted by the reich.

Gilmour continues, “Kipling was so disgusted by the Nazis and the sight of their flag that he removed the swastika, a Hindu symbol of good luck, from his bookbindings. It had been his trademark for nearly forty years but it was now ‘defiled beyond redemption’.” [This latter quote is footnoted "K to Bok, 1 Nov. 1935, and to White, 28 Dec 1935.]

Call a friend? I think this is the current practice in rural parts of Alabama, and similar areas. Not what I would call justice.

Ah that’s unfortunate. I’ve not met many sikhs, but the few I have seem to have had it ingrained in them via their religion that one is equal to everyone else, and you are supposed to live a life of service.

That sort of decreased emphasis on ego seems to work better for Sikhism than say Buddhism… I’ve met a lot of entitled Buddhist dicks who seem not to have gotten or understood the message. But then, I grew up going to Buddhist church, so there’s the sheer numbers aspect again.

They keep saying that but evidence suggests otherwise. See, for example, that bigoted campground manager who chased away a black couple at gunpoint last week.

My hometown had a big punk and nonracist skin population. One day some nazis from Manchester showed up in town on a recruiting drive and the local boys beat the everliving fuck out of them.

Good times.

That’s the proper response, really. You gotta enforce upon them the reality that they’ll never make headway. Otherwise they’re like dandelions and you gotta use chemicals and bombs and shit to get rid of them.

If I was a kid again and lived in his area, “Mat Night” would be a lot more fun.

Well yeah. Heinlein would have said that the main problem there was that the victims were not armed.

The answer those people are searching for is: lynchings and stonings.

I am sure everyone would love to think their communities are full of rational people who want to do the fair and reasonable thing. But history is full of examples across the world of the citizens devolving into a mob and killing wrong doers of heinous acts. There are cases where even though the “law” had taken them into custody and started the process of a trial and “justice”, the populace broke them out and hung them anyway. You can still find examples of this sort of thing happening today where people are killed in the streets - sometimes based on wrong information - because the people thought they had done something horrible.

I remember being in an army surplus/antique store and finding a really nice set of leather bound Kipling and noticed on the title page the swastikas going around the border. Eye brow raised, I saw the copyright was in the 20s and figured it must be pre Nazis. Now a days I wonder if that set was under or over priced… coulda been on Antique Roadshow!

Of course the racist campground manager had no way of knowing they weren’t armed until she pulled a gun on them. Had they reciprocated I doubt everyone’s manners would have suddenly improved.

Yeah, that’s kinda what I was thinking Halloween in his hood this year might be like.

But ultimately someone has to have the authority to enforce those decisions and stpp threats to piblic safety. That’s where these grand ideas fall apart.

I’m not saying it can’t be done. I am saying that I don’t have a lot of faith it working on a mass scale. There are gobs of historial and current news events where the law is taken into the hands of the populace in spite of or in lieu of organzied law enforcement.
