Futbol isn’t my thing, but I understand why people are fans. Even so, this year’s festival of corruption, authoritarianism, labour abuses, and bigotry should really should prompt some soul searching about whether an alternative to FIFA should be created and whether scummy regimes like Qatar’s should be excluded from bidding on the World Cup.

Action in that regard can only be taken by team owners, players, and national governing bodies. However, without real mass pressure from the fans they’ll continue with business as normal.

It strikes me that in some sports leagues fan-owned teams are a thing (which seem to be in lower leagues in general)… If there could be more of that, at the national level, maybe there could be an alternative to FIFA?
