Wow.
For background, the WHO has long denied Taiwan membership. The People’s Republic of China wants control of Taiwan and claims sovereignty over it, but knows they could start a major war if they invade like they did in Tibet, so instead the National People’s Congress (the ruling body of the PRC) threatens sanctions against any other government or NGO that recognizes Taiwan’s sovereignty. Meanwhile, Taiwan has been flattening the curve successfully without direct support from the WHO. The interviewer in the video is a Hong Kong based journalist. HK’s resistance to the PRC’s hegemony has been in the news a lot, so everyone’s probably current on that.
Where’s the Republicans going on about “States’ Rights”?
This ship in limbo seems like a microcosm of the failure in leadership.
In the article link I posted regarding McCormick Place, FEMA is working along with the Army Corps of Engineers. I can’t vouch for anyplace else, obviously, but they’re at least on the job in Chicago.
Just for fun
Just a reminder, Donald Trump and the Republicans are not doing nothing, rather they are very hard at work.
As no matter how stupid and lazy their product, all media outlets will do their best to trumpet it to the stars.
AKA: they were given ones that didn’t work. Because that’s how petty the White House is.
Florida governor blocks Miami Herald, Tampa Bay Times from coronavirus press conference
A reporter for the state capital bureau operated jointly by two of Florida’s largest newspapers was denied access Saturday to a press conference by Gov. Ron DeSantis detailing the state’s latest efforts to contain one of the largest outbreaks of the novel coronavirus in the country. Mary Ellen Klas, the Herald’s bureau chief for the Miami Herald/Tampa Bay Times Tallahassee Bureau, said she was refused entry into the Capitol in Tallahassee to attend a press briefing by the governor, lieutenant governor, director of emergency management and state surgeon general regarding COVID-19 testing, access to medicine and efforts to prevent New Yorkers from flying into the state.
When a guy from Boston defends New York, you know someone fucked up big time:
We in Chicago have a mayor and governor who are facilitating their work rather than impeding it. Amazing what a difference that makes.
The U.S. death rate, population adjusted, is still tracking Italy 20 days ago (there’s a bump in the Italian data, probably due to reporting lag). However, case load spikes on March 19th, which is about 5 days after the start of spring break. That bodes ill…
(All data CSSE/Johns Hopkins, plots mine.)
Tempted to write a script that forges tweets and screenshots them for posterity.
