It may not currently be official policy to discriminate against foreigners in China, but from what I’ve heard it’s definitely going on in the private sector. And darker skinned people (not just Africans specifically) are definitely the victims of prejudice there.

Trump’s claim that he could force governors to reopen their states comes after he spent weeks arguing that he didn’t believe he should pressure states that hadn’t imposed stay-at-home restrictions to do so. He had cited his belief in local control of government.

Thread comparing the response of the UK and Ireland to the outbreak, laying out how the responses differed at key times. It’s worth reading to the end.

Here in Norway they basically just said to stay here and we’ll be OK. (My visa is technically into August, so I don’t expect to have trouble in any event.)

I think there are still flights from Helsinki to NYC, maybe through London.

It’s really annoying that the sight of the science denying, murderous, racist Tories makes our government look good. Because it really only when compared to literal fascists that Varadkar and Co. look good. Make no mistake we fucked up too. Fucked up good.

Sure we didn’t aggressively dive in two footed and start digging like the Tories but we have made many of the same fuck ups : nursing homes, lack of testing, lack of PPE. And they have been less than honest about the testing in particular when they needed to fess up to the failure. I get it, we didn’t have the reagent in particular and were back of the queue. We’re used to that. But public health initiatives absolutely need public trust and cooperation.

Given the complete absence of competence (and, hell, the presence of downright malevolence) at the federal level, this is good to see.

I do wonder if we’ll start to see more of this regarding other matters if Trump wins re-election in November, though. It’s generally not good when a country’s own government pretty explicitly tells states to go fuck themselves.

Yep.

On a conference call hosted by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the governors of Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island reinforced the notion that the decision to reopen their states is one for governors,

It’s sure gonna be wild in 60 years when the population of the Transcontinental Compact of Member States holds its completely pointless ceremonial vote for POTUS by mail using the last remaining vestiges of the postal service.

Suspicious senate stock sale spurt spurs scrutiny scheme: This website tracks which shares US senators are unloading mid-pandemic

In the wake of reports last month that four US senators sold stocks shortly after a classified briefing on January 24 about the risk posed by the novel coronavirus, Timothy Carambat, a mechanical and software engineer, created a website to make stock sales by every senator more visible.

Details about the stock sales in news reports prompted Carambat to look into the source of the data, which turned out to be the US Senate Financial Disclosures website.

Media outlets have played a crucial role during the COVID-19 crisis to educate the public and provide needed emergency information. To ensure the legitimacy of this year’s elections, they should go a step further and offer regular, timely instructions about how to vote during this national emergency. And they should start right away, every day and in every publication, perhaps with a “democracy box” on their front page or home page with details about how to register and cast a ballot.
