I’m annoyed that we have to be impressed by this.

A leader who can

  • Understand a complex issue
  • Work out what steps to take next
  • Explain this clearly to the public

All this should be the very least to expect from a head of government. Technical competence, listening to the scientific experts and communicating clearly are all part of the basic job descriptionInstead, we promote reality-show drama and waffle, over quiet competence.

People won’t sit through CNN’s McDonald’s ads to watch quiet competence.

Just a reminder, when the national campaign begins in earnest, CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times, and everybody else will be all in on trying to throw the election to Trump, and only if the Democrats recognize that and are willing to fight them and threaten them will they have any chance.

Well, WE don’t, but I get what you’re saying

Dead kids have been acceptable collateral damage in the United States well before Covid-19. They have been regularly sacrificed on the altars of gun rights, for-profit healthcare and welfare “reform”.
Not trying to derail into a discussion of those topics - just want to point out that kids dying as a consequence of “our” actions and inactions is generally met with some combination of thoughts and prayers, victim blaming and indifference. I don’t see how it would be any different with Covid-19.

That there are never consequences when you are wealthy and well connected. What’s the worst that could happen? Carnival goes bankrupt, stiffs it’s creditors, gets a bailout, bonuses all around!

Oh, right: when Joe Biden becomes president he’ll investigate and send them to jail; what was I thinking?

AOC is on point as always.

To borrow a meme, this is the difference between Black Lives Matter protestors blocking a highway and MAGA assholes blocking a hospital:

Received from ours today:

This is an urgent request from XXXXXXXX Pediatrics to contact your legislators TODAY to encourage them to pass additional funding for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). As background, the PPP is a small business loan program that was passed to support businesses like ours that are impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. As you are probably aware, we have postponed a majority of visits to our office in an effort to keep our patients at home where they are safe. This means that our financial situation has suffered significantly and, despite cutting all expenses we can, it appears possible that we will not be able to stay open through the summer. We have applied for the PPP, which would allow us to stay open and bridge the gap between now and a time when we can resume normal operations and increase our visits safely again, but our application is still pending and the program has run out of funding. Washington is gridlocked with partisan bickering; meanwhile the survival of businesses like ours hangs in the balance.

We know that a lot of families are struggling and a lot of other businesses are in the same situation as we are. Legislators do pay attention to what their constituents are saying. Please contact your legislators and ask them to pass a bill quickly to provide more funds to this program. Links to the contact pages for our Senators and Representative are below:
