Sadly there’s no plushie coronavirus from giantmicrobes.com yet.

ETA: I mean just look at how cute MRSA Superbug is with his cape. He needs a crowned and spiky sidekick.

Give it time. Would be a nice DIY project, too.

I’ve often wondered why we don’t talk about potassium as much as sodium

The “adequate intake” amounts published by the National Academies are actually higher for potassium but we all just assume we’re getting enough, and meanwhile we intentionally put sodium in everything

WHO later updated their ORT formula to include potassium. The salt-sugar ORT is a basic one to get people through, say, cholera with household stuff. (Sadly, in the third world, the trickiest part is the clean water.)

What’s the vector Victor?

Why does the coronavirus spread so easily between people?

Researchers have identified microscopic features that could make the pathogen more infectious than the SARS virus — and serve as drug targets.

I love Giant Microbes! This site is my go-to for goofy gifts, which are pretty much all the gifts I give!

I bought Inosine pranobex pills, it’s an immunostimulant that is available without prescription where I live. For me it really helps with flu (it was first recommended to me by a doctor) and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was effective for other viral infections.

So here is the answer to a question I asked earlier:

The funding for CHCs and state HDs is great, but $0 for hospitals and individuals impacted. So if you have to quarantine, don’t look for help. YOYO, folks.

They’ve doubled the sugar to the salt. I wonder why?

On top of everything else:

(unrelated)

The NSF and NIH obviously are getting a good chunk of this, I’ve already had a “Dear Colleague” letter from the former inviting application under their “Rapid Response Research funding mechanism”. Hard to see how much of this will be useful in the short term, but maybe if we manage to dig out from under this disease the resulting science will help us be better prepared for the next one.

Think about what will happen when it hits America’s concentration camps and prisons.

It’s 45 currently. And no one should be getting on a cruise ship at this point!

Incidentally, a quick Google search will find you a limitless supply of US newspaper articles arguing that prisoners should not have free healthcare. And an equally limitless supply of scandals involving inadequate healthcare in prisons.

The cruise companies are trying to bribe customers to not cancel their trips:
