One component of how broken we are as a society is how much critical work here relies on charity.

I think about this, after going out today to get the mail. A trip I held off on, to combine with a trip to the store, because I’m trying to do the best for everyone around me, by limiting my exposure to them, and likewise, theirs to me.

I’d really like to have bought rubbing alcohol, to disinfect what I am then passing off to my mother, who is in her 70’s. Most of the mail shipments were her pill bottles. The shelf is pretty bare of alcohol, as it has been for weeks. I still have some, but I wonder why we aren’t rationing.

Why an empty shelf, instead of a bottle a month, or something equivalent, that would allow us all to stay safe? Are we really so afraid to say “socialist” at this point? We did this in the 1940’s, and all got behind it.

How to Reopen Safely
  1. "The number of new cases has declined for at least 14 days;

  2. "Rapid diagnostic testing capacity is sufficient to test, at minimum, all people with COVID-19 symptoms, including mild cases, as well as close contacts and those in essential roles;

  3. "The healthcare system is able to safely care for all patients, including providing appropriate personal protective equipment for healthcare workers;

  4. “There is sufficient public health capacity to conduct contact tracing for all new cases and their close contacts.”

Dr. Caitlin Rivers, a researcher from the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security who co-authored the document, spoke about safely reopening during a hearing with the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Wednesday and said that, while her comments were her own and did not reflect the university, there are no states that currently meet all of these criteria.
