Ongoing coronavirus happenings

I think it is the only effective way to slow down the spreading of this disease.

Additionally, all school events are cancelled. My daughter’s school play, her Broadway trip, her prom. She’s totally gutted. But better that than getting sick.

Casinos are being shuttered in Illinois as well, and many religious organizations are getting religion about flattening the curve as well.

I didn’t set foot outside the house today. Yeah, that’s ridiculous. I should have at least taken a walk 'round the block.

I saw a fucking Princess ship docked in the harbor on my home with my entire work desktop in tow; we’re working from home for at least the next two weeks.

Yes: universal healthcare. I have little doubt that the US culture of avoiding treatment (because of the cost) will exacerbate the spread of the virus.

  • Screening. The government needs to immediately support health care providers and clinics to set up screening centres. Greater stand-alone outpatient COVID-19 screening capacity is required. Patients should not be told to go to their doctors’ offices, or to emergency departments.
  • Hospital bed capacity.
  • Intensive care and ventilator supply .
  • Personnel planning.
  • Long-term care facilities .

Familiar points around here, sadly.

There is a cruising ship with more than 600 people off the coast of Recife, northeast of Brazil, without permission to dock as there are two possibly sick passengers on board.

BTW, at the current rate of increase in the USA (around 75% additional cases per day) there will be 350 million infections by around April 4th, 22 days from now (entire population of the country). Yes I know there is more complex epidemiology here, but this rate is unchanged since the outbreak began and no current evidence shows it to be slowing down.

Not to mention avoiding testing because the consequences of a positive are not bearable. Perfect system to ensure spread of communicable illness.

See my previous comments about cruise ships. They need to be shut down yesterday.

And it wasn’t enough to prevent many deaths, as they reached the threshold of the hospitals capacity to deal with so many sick people for weeks.

If that happened there, a place that has a good health structure, imagine what can happen in a country with a short-sighted social vision or in a poor and politically divided nation?

These ships became giant traps.

Also imagine all the first world nations get their shit together and stop the virus, but a closed-border nation like North Korea festers and then reinfects the planet again and the survivors have to go through this 2x or 3x more until the vaccine is tested and ready.

And then imagine the virus mutates a few times, as well, past the vaccine defenses. Seriously, these are not far-fetched scenarios. We already stepped in the doo doo. But now the Roomba has ahold of it and is spreading it around the entire house.

The effects of this disease in the world economy and in our society are unpredictable and unimaginable.

Even if this one is a smaller cruise ship, dealing with 600 possibly infected people is a big logistics problem.

One of the monsters, with ten times as many people? OMGWTF!

I hope you’re all wearing gloves. (That’s what the checkout people are doing here. Cloth gloves, which I guess are both more comfortable.)
