So, at least something good may come out of it?

This is the first sign of the Hipster Apocalypse we’ve all been waiting for.
Bit heavy handed though, eh?

A colleague in Tuscany just told me much the same thing today, but I find it hard to believe that with the amount of travel between the northern provinces it won’t spread quickly. La Nazione is reporting yet another new case there today.

To no one’s surprise Il Douche has issued his first effective response to the COVID-19 crisis. By muzzling the CDC. They are no longer allowed to make any statements to the press without clearing it politically first. Fuck.

The nearest Home Depot is sold out of dust masks. Somehow I don’t think that many people have suddenly started sanding drywall in the last two days. Also, from what I recall from Biology 101, viruses are much tinier than drywall dust, so…

Despite some fearmongering, it’s not airborne. So why is it a problem that people don’t know the difference? Because if they think it’s airborne they stop doing helpful things like washing your damn hands.

After you win (or lose) a game, there’s a screen that invites players to share the news:

“My Virus, called Coronavirus, just wiped out the world in 393 days.”

to facebook, twitter, or email.

It’s a fun game, but some might think it in poor taste. (You play as the plague, and invest in various symptoms, special abilities, etc. You win the game by infecting every person in the the world, and then killing them before they can finish the cure).

Is Pandemic (also available on the app store) similarly banned?

There’s also that inconvenient fact that most masks are to protect others from those that are already sick.

Electron micrographs of negative-stained 2019-nCoV particles were generally spherical with some pleomorphism (Figure 3). Diameter varied from about 60 to 140 nm. Virus particles had quite distinctive spikes, about 9 to 12 nm, and gave virions the appearance of a solar corona. Extracellular free virus particles and inclusion bodies filled with virus particles in membrane-bound vesicles in cytoplasm were found in the human airway epithelial ultrathin sections. This observed morphology is consistent with the Coronaviridae family.

An N95 respirator is a respiratory protective device designed to achieve a very close facial fit and very efficient filtration of airborne particles.

The ‘N95’ designation means that when subjected to careful testing, the respirator blocks at least 95 percent of very small (0.3 micron) test particles. If properly fitted, the filtration capabilities of N95 respirators exceed those of face masks. However, even a properly fitted N95 respirator does not completely eliminate the risk of illness or death.

N95 respirators are not designed for children or people with facial hair. Because a proper fit cannot be achieved on children and people with facial hair, the N95 respirator may not provide full protection. So, a respirator, if properly used, may block the corona virus, but a bog standard drywall mask cannot.

A glance at the home depot site suggests that their selection of 3m n95 masks–("Limited stock avaialable) aren’t on the approved list.
