I would like to thank the people in this thread who posted that sedation was not always necessary. I should get a colonoscopy soon and when I read the article, I thought that the procedure was more serious than I believed. Thank to the sharing of experience in that thread, I realized it is uncomfortable, but not necessarily painful.
This is not to say that sedation should not ne an option when particulars require it, of course.
