It does seem at least possible that he thought she was giving him the umbrella. From the uniforms the women are wearing they appear to be attendants of some kind.

I doubt height had anything to do with it. Having a WOMAN – heaven forfend! – protecting a man by holding an umbrella over his head is emasculating, for those sorts who are just pretending to be real men.

They spoke for a bit first before he would even allow her to start. It seems very likely that he knew she was there as an official attendant.
