Pastor claims that you are robbing God if you are not donating 10%, even if you are in debt

" Economist Professor Michael Hudson says we have been interpreting the bible incorrectly. And he has written an entire book about it. Rather than sex and sin, both Christianity and Judaism is preoccupied with debt. As it turns out, Jesus was a socialist activist who paid the ultimate price fighting for the reinstatement of regular debt jubilees."

This is pretty much straight out of the Bible - read Malachi 3:8. If paying a tithe seems irresponsible… well, consider the ravens (see Luke 12:24).

This is pretty normal Christian stuff.

But if you take the money intended for God and use it to buy yourself a jet plane, why that’s just fine.

But there are so MANY first Baptist churches that are bigger than costcos…

[I’m trying very hard to make a joke about how there are “first” baptist churches on literally every corner of southern towns… clearly not enough southerners here…]

Does Missouri count? Anyway I got it.

Thank you! Glad someone did… Jesus would’ve laughed.

And yes. It does. Lest we forget the Missouri compromise.

I’m with you on this one, @anon61221983. I am active with my (Unitarian Universalist) church and proud of the Social Justice work we do.

But it was a Union state and it’s north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

Actually, it was a border state that sent troops to both sides.

The real question though is how many churches do they have per square miles in any random town, because that’s what I grew up with… high density churching.

Ah, yes, my upbringing on the Canadian prairies has caused me to miss that. We’re still loaded with evangelicals, but not so much the Baptist variety.

Square mile? Within a four block walk there are were three churches in my old neighborhood. All three were Catholic. The reason for this was each church served a different ethnic community. Left to right Polish, Irish, and German. The Lithuanian church is six blocks away so it’s not in the picture. Notice all the churches have their own school. The German church has been merged into the Irish church a few years ago.

At the Presbyterian church I attended as a child, the line in the Lord’s Prayer went, “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors”, where other churches seemed to use “trespasses”. That may actually be a more accurate translation, but some writers interpret it as a spiritual debt caused by sin, not a monetary debt.

OKAY… I was making a JOKE about the number of baptist churches found in southern cities…

I have said that THREE TIMES NOW.

Men really don’t listen to women, do they?

He can, but he avoids taxes if you give it to him directly, as it’s a religious contribution.

I’ll bet this preacher wouldn’t be pleased if everyone in his church decided to tithe directly to homeless people instead of giving it to him, though.

If you haven’t seen Marjoe, it’s a must see. A little hard to find tho. I saw it when it first came out and was really surprised that Dallas even allowed it to be shown. Dallas was super conservative at the time. Blue laws still in force and they had their own movie rating system because, obviously, the MPAA was far too liberal.
