PBS: why do some people hate cilantro?

You monster!

(The citric acid is actually a good preservative)

shoot, why does anyone hate any kind of food, especially something as benign as a plant. I’ll eat just about anything that isn’t straight-up poison.

Except bugs. I don’t do bugs.

Some think Stink Bugs smell like cilantro. Interested?

I find it interesting that a lot of people equate it to soap. I hate cilantro. I hate the smell and the taste. We buy it for our bunny because it’s cheap and he loves it, and we make fresh green things a regular part of his diet. I have to aggressively wash my hands afterwards to get rid of the awful smell, and i basically plug off my nose while i’m preparing it for him. I’ve had things with cilantro where i didn’t know it had been added and have realized is inedible because of the addition after taking a bite. I don’t know what cilantro tastes like, but i wouldn’t call it soap. It’s something much, much worse :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t mind the taste of soap itself. I have used soap to brush my teeth. It’s pretty mild tasting (at least the soaps i have tasted are), so i honestly find it amusing when people make it out to taste really bad.

Cilantro also smells like cilantro;
apply occam’s razor;
ergo, no thank you.

Yes, your wiring changes. As one gets older, one’s taste buds lose acuity.

I too strongly dislike it, and it doesn’t taste like soap to me either. Instead it tastes metallic, like I’m chewing on aluminum foil. The smell doesn’t bother me, though.

Cilantro is one of my favorite flavors. But genetics are what they are.

In North America we do call the spice made from the seeds “coriander”, but we call the leaves “cilantro” because they’re used a lot in Mexican cooking and that’s the Spanish word for it.

It’s Coriandrum sativum. Linnaean dog-latin, do you speak it?

In American kitchens coriander refers to the dried fruit, cilantro the fresh leaves. An important distinction!

Phuh, this from a man who disparages olives.

According to this PBS video, I have a chromosomal abnormality that makes it taste terrible.

See? Nothing we can’t solve with a little eugenics.

Same here.

So we really do not know what cilantro tastes like. Maybe the soap crowd is correct?

Put me in the “tastes like soap” column.

Believe me, cilantro knows what it’s done.

Mmmmm, cilantro. To me, it tastes like… cilantro. It has a savor that’s like nothing else. I’m glad I like it, though. Tacos topped with just cilantro and onion (along with the meat of choice) are delicious.

One lesson learned, though: wait until you’re almost finished cooking the dish before adding it, otherwise it loses flavor and becomes stringy.

Mace is the outer shell of the nutmeg nut, while nutmeg is the inner nut.
Two different flavors, BTW.

me, to server: is there anything on the menu that is possible to order with no cilantro in it?

server: do you have an allergy?

me: no, but it tastes like poison

server: we can make this, or this, we can leave it out, but are you sure you don’t have an allergy?

me: no, it just tastes bad, I’ll have this thing, but with no cilantro in it thank you

(time elapses, all the food is brought out, there is cilantro mixed with everything, stirred into everything, garnishing everything)

me: I’m going home
