Dammit.
RIP.
By every account I’ve ever seen, he was a real mensch.
His comments on Reddit seemed representative of the person. Nice, positive and friendly.
His were recognizable, because his comments were always signed:
Cheers,
Peter Mayhew
which is unusual. No-one signs their Reddit comments except Peter Mayhew.
Chewbacca was always my favorite. Adios mi amigo.
Uncle Chewie, No!
-Kylo Ren
That’s quite adorable, and kinda sweet.
One of the few times this is acceptable.
Statement from Mayhew’s copilot:
beat me to it. heartbreaking.
one of the things i liked about peter mayhew’s twitter feed was that it was so obviously HIM, not some image-maintenance firm, and it was always so giving and positive. i had been worried about him lately because his feed had become more sporadic lately, and he was looking more and more frail. i’ve had an emotional tie to him since '77 or so, when i learned we shared a birthdate. rest in peace, gentle wookiee.
mark hamill’s tweet was also quite moving.
I’m glad he was finally able to receive recognition and a medal from Princess Leia at the mtv movie awards - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YUXIz8C3028
You might expect this to be a silly one-joke vid, but it actually serves to demonstrate just how expressive Peter was in that big suit:
(No. 3 isn’t him, it’s the new guy, but otherwise… there are other similar vids on YT too).
Kind of touching, and a quick, salutary reminder this sad day. “Let the wookie win,” indeed.
Well said - and welcome to boingboing!
Mrouw mrouw!
Peter will live on in our memories as one of the best Star Wars characters. One of the many that helped shape my childhood.
So sad.
That scene when Han is out looking for Luke on Hoth and they close the blast doors with them still out there and Chewie watches the door close and screams…such a great scene. I’ll never forget that.
Mark Hamill is one classy guy and a national treasure. Especially in these times.
Is it only me or does everyone find Chewbacca cute?
I had the pleasure or meeting him in the Indianapolis airport several years ago while returning to DFW from GenCon. A truly all around nice guy who would be completely overlooked if he wasn’t so damn tall. He was very giving, very patient, and his calm demeanor would put at ease even the most star-struck of fan. I miss him already.
