Any company releasing a vaccine prior to November is suspect in my book.
Who said anything about “worry”?
I’m guessing that trump will give a pharm company big breaks if they get something, anything, by election time.
I’m keeping my eyes on what Canada’s health officials deem safe, since we obviously cannot trust our own gov & institutions.
5 will get you 10 we end up buying vaccines from China eventually.
I hope this vaccine is at least truly promising… and this is not just a case of the CEO pumping up his shares for a quick buck selloff.
US Population: 328.2 million
Goal: Approximately 100 million doses this year
So, what’s the plan for the remaining 228.2 million? I guess those are the estimated losses from the post-election civil war?
It’ll be just enough for swing states at the rest will go to Fla.
Yeah, the Trump administration arbitrarily dictated October as their target date for a vaccine, totally independent of all evidence and processes, with no other consideration than it swaying the election. What I’m hearing from people who know their stuff is that it’s impossible to complete even the most expedited safety trials before November. So anything getting an approval before then will be despite the fact that it will not have been even remotely properly tested for either safety or efficacy.
My guess is that elderly and hospital workers will be first - after that if we were smart the grocery workers and people too essential to go home during lockdown - which - if the vaccine works - would shut down those vectors and keep our health care workers safe.
That’d be a start - teachers - I think - would be high on the list.
Of course what the fuck am I saying - of course it will be the rich and sports first - followed by the bars.
Yeah, right.
People are suing Pfizer over Protonix. Protonix lawsuits say Pfizer failed to warn about the risk of kidney problems. In 2013, Pfizer agreed to pay $55 million to settle criminal charges. The U.S. Department of Justice said Wyeth promoted Protonix for unapproved uses in 2000 and 2001. Pfizer acquired Wyeth in 2009.
Nearly 10,000 women filed Prempro breast cancer lawsuits against Pfizer. By 2012, Pfizer settled most of the claims for more than $1 billion.
About 3,000 people filed Chantix lawsuits against Pfizer. They claimed Chantix caused suicidal thoughts and severe psychological disorders. In 2013, the company set aside about $288 million to resolve these cases. One case settled for an undisclosed amount just before trial in 2012.
More than 6,000 testosterone therapy lawsuits were pending in May 2018. The lawsuits say testosterone products caused strokes, blood clots and heart attacks.
In 1996, Pfizer conducted an unapproved clinical trial. It involved children with meningitis in Nigeria, CBS News reported. The trials led to the deaths of 11 children. Dozens more were left disabled.
From Drugwatch.
In other news from the future:
August 16th: Pfizer CEO sells a few billion $ of shares in the company.
September 2nd: Pfizer stock plummets upon the news that the vaccine doesn’t work and won’t be approved due to massive side-effects.
October 3rd: Trump tries to fire Pfizer CEO and doesn’t understand why he can’t.
Yet another October promise date:
Political bullshit in the works.
November, eh? Like, at the very beginning of November?
Like “get your covid anti-chinavirus shot at the polling station”?
Actually, that’s 278.2 Million remaining. He said two doses will be needed, so only 50 Million will receive it. I agree with @themadpoet about who should and who will be first in line to get it.
I also think anything before January probably won’t have gone through sufficient safety trials for short term and long term side effects. Even a January release seems optimistic for a safe product…
From the article:
Bourla said patients’ progress would be tracked for over two years.
I’ll just circle November 2022 on my calendar…in pencil. I’ll probably erase it long before then, once the backlash begins,
Additionally, what constitutes “available to Americans”? What if you don’t have health insurance (homeless, or unable to get it for reasons)?
They’re testing a vaccine in my city. The news article said that you don’t have to have health insurance to participate in the test. I sent them an email asking who pays for medical care for the uninsured who suffer complications from the vaccine.
Never got an answer.
It will need to be use in concert with other methods like social distancing until more people are vaccinated and herd immunity is established.
Most estimates for COVID-19 herd immunity threshold say that between 60-70 percent of the population would need to be immune to the virus. Good luck reaching that with 100 million doses… or ever, taking into consideration all the anti-vaxxers and the people who insist the virus is a hoax.
Yeah, that doesn’t sound shady as fuck; not at all…
With Trump’s habit of tiffing his workers, if Pfizer wants anything for delivering before Election Day they had best get it before they deliver.
So we still have to social distance and wear masks, but how many won’t, how many wont get the vaccine at first. Here comes winter when we might have the second wave. None of that matters, because Mr CEO gets a bonus with the stock price rise and Trump can proudly said he did it. I wish I could be optimistic, but it’s 2020 and Trump is still President.
