There are serious documentaries on the topic!
What is the 80’s/early 90’s movie with piranhas released into the drainage system to assassinate someone? I will not sleep tonight.
Edit- they swim through the drains into a swimming pool and I don’t think it is successful.
There are even more dangerous fishes swimming in tropical waters…
Really though, as those articles do review, there are so few reports of a candiru actually harming someone you can probably count them on one hand. It just happens that those reports sound extremely memorable.
It’s not like piranhas couldn’t bite someone there too! It happens in Wednesday, though those were plainly movie piranhas rather than actual fish.
The most dangerous (to humans) animal in the world is the mosquito, killing over 600,000 people a year by malaria. And even though piranhas and candiru are nasty critters, they pale compared to Australian aquatic fauna like irukanji.
