Marielitos (like the op-ed author) tend to lean Democratic. The staunch GOP support was more from the ones who fled after the revolution.
There are lots of great small restaurants that aren’t going to make it through this… right @noahdjango? This sucks. The restaurant landscape in about a year is going to look far more like the suburbs…
probably, but after working in the industry for this long, I’ve been thinking of it as a false economy for years.
the successful models are not restaurants, they’re “restaurant groups” that package several current trends at different restaurants, then close and start another as trends change. they restaff with workers that will put up with the most crap and chuck the rest. the false economy, which allows throwing together a new “concept” every couple years to milk it and then bounce, centers on not having to pay staff like any other industry. half the staff–servers–are paid $2.25 or whatever it is an hour due to the US’s bizarre tipping culture and laws. their banking practices (“sweeper” accounts for payroll, biweekly pay means over 80 hours for overtime. if you make 45 hours one week and >35 the next, no OT from week one) are rigged in favor of the ownership.
Something like Manuel’s is a great model: family owned, staff has worked there forever, one location, community hub. or Majestic or Varsity keeping traditions alive. they’re in danger and that’s terrible. but the restaurant scene writ large is varying degrees of predatory and the chicken’s coming home to roost. I hope the community can rally around the good ones, though.
Oh yeah. No doubt…
An amazing place. Seriously, if any of you find yourselves in the ATL, it’s a must.
Agreed.
Me too. I’d really have for Manuel’s to go under… that would be an incalculable loss to the city. Especially if the space got turned into some chain bar and grill. It’s been weird enough seeing those condos go up in the old lot.
looks like that’s been deleted and replaced:
You’ve got it wrong, comrade. We’re not out of butter. The store that’s out of butter is across the street.
beyond the denial of unemployment, there’s one reason nobody seems to want to mention: racism.
it’s well known this is affecting black communities worse than white communities. by re-opening kemp is choosing to further injure communities of color.
want to skew the vote? get everyone who’d vote against you and your party sick, or worse.
Yeah. I can raise you one by any media outlet in the US on any given day. I can also find reporters in most that are doing a good job. What’s your point?
Fluff reporter: “And for the first time in nearly 3½ years, the first lady seems to have found her voice.”
Me:
Corporate media is not your friend.
Wonderful. Remember the comment I made about reading Chomsky in the 80’s? You’re not saying anything we don;t already know over here. You also derailed a comment I made about the need to save the post office for our next election, with similar comments.
Fox has lots of great reporters and their news reporting is always accurate. The point is that the “narrative” and “focus” are controlled by the bosses, and the bosses have very specific purposes that have nothing to do with journalism (at best just making more money).
Calling out a fluff reporter for trying to turn Melania into some kind of Covid-saint — just because the White House can’t be bothered to send someone to New York to keep her PR person on point — is fair fodder for this thread.
Oh good god. Why was it a response to my post then?
All of this circle jerk infighting minutia about the media outlets every time a post is made quoting a media outlet.
It’s fine to point out that a media outlet is doing a bad job, and I do it too.
It fucking takes the piss out of a lot of arguments to spend all of our time on the messengers instead of the messages.
I’m sorry (not aimed you of course), but… HOW IS THAT NOT ILLEGAL…
