Post your collections/passions

I second posting Gunpla pics. I swear, Gundam models looks like a glass of 18 year old Scotch to a recovering alcoholic for me. They look so damn cool. I just know that 1) i can’t afford another hobby and 2) no way my brain would let me actually finish one - or more than one. I’d be to perfectionist about it.

Gunpla is like catnip!

So many I want to buy, but my bank account can’t handle it, and I’ve got a ton of models I’ve still need to build…

I took this quick photo to hopefully encourage @anon34846435 to post their own:

I like how it resembles a bug or turtle.

Sorry, removing images before the site goes away!

This is best as I could get, but I’m happy with these shots. With @MagicFox 's advice of taking the picture outdoors and with their encouragement as well I’m happy to present my two favorite models, Wing Gundam on the left of the wide shot with the blue torso and the sword; and the Gundam MK. II on the right of the wide shot with the black torso and gun/shield. They are my favorites because they are the two specific Gundams that first drove my imagination when I saw them as a kid and really inspired the desire to return to Gunpla when I did.

Like I said, only the most basic models right now, but it’s a hobby I’ve had all my life and am eager to explore further! I have two more models, but couldn’t get them camera-ready today.

ETA: that I also wanted to thank the encouragement of @Mister44 for giving me the confidence to post these pictures.

Thank you, I love your photos! I love your use of light, and your posing really captures the action and tells a story.

I can’t wait to see more, and am curious what your other two are. Gundam also captured my imagination when I first saw it. I remember watching Stardust Memories and being blown away!

Man, you shouldn’t need ME for the confidence, those look great!

Somewhere I have one figure of I think the basic Gundam. The one holding the gun in your pics looks like it. Like I said, I think the design is uber cool. I never got into the anime because - OMG - its so damn dense… I have other shows I need to watch - like Star Wars stuff! - first. But I will always appreciate looking at cool mechs! Robotech Veritech fighters are still one of my favorite designs ever.

I posted this on another post, but I should post it - here - before we migrate to Substack ( I may re-create this post there).

My 2nd passion behind Boba Fett is The Shadow, and I spent not a lot of time, but a bit of money rounding up parts to make 2 versions of Lego Shadows. The left one is more of the pulp DESCRIPTION version and the one on the right more of the Comic Book look.

I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of a mushroom forest. I remember reading somewhere that earth was at one point, hundreds of million years ago, covered in mushroom forests. Unfortunately mushrooms are smol now. At least there is camera trickery.

I remember reading that too, but I think they weren’t mushrooms, but large, tree trunk-like fungi. At least that is what I recall. It was before plants took over the land.

But yes, I agree giant mushrooms would look cool… though practically they wouldn’t last long and quickly rot away.

Another fun fact - we are more closely related to Fungi than Fungi are to plants.

OMG! You designed those yourself? I would have thought the Lego imagineers designed them as part of a classic set — that’s awesome!

That was it! We’ll, mushrooms are the fruiting body of certain fungus, so a Fox can dream, right?

Are you implying that I’m a space orc? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

It’s all cobbled together from other officially released pieces. Some of it I got at a local shop. I kept finding new bits that I didn’t know about and ordered from other places. Bricklink is an awesome place to buy - but the ONE thing I wish they did is allow you to make a “list” and then it combs through all the sellers to see how has most or all of the parts you need.

The body on the left is from a Jazz player, and the one on the right i think was a business guy. The cape on the right was the evil queen from Snow White. Ninjago for the scarves, both plastic and fabric.

I really wish I could reshape the hat on the right. I tried with some spares with the heat gun, and got the brim shaped more like the left - but it shrank the crown! Doh. I might try hot water next time. I got a couple more spares.

Well I was originally going to wait until I got more models to show other pictures, but with the impending move to Substack, decided it’d be better to share what I can as it is. I took these pictures with their box behind them so that their name is visible for anyone curious.

Today is far too windy of a day to take the Gunpla outside for a shoot, but I did my best with these pictures of my other two Gunpla.

Sorry, removing images before the site goes away!

The one above suffered a break that happened during construction, so I intentionally posed it to make it less obvious. I would like to one day get some paint and make it look “battle-damaged” so I can feel less bad about breaking it.

That is some really impressive kitbashing! Kudos! It really does look like an official Lego release.

I use the hot water method to shape hands around objects for a tighter grip, and stubborn warped model pieces to fit in place. I wouldn’t have thought heat modding would work on Legos; those bricks are nigh indestructible! Nice to know that is something they can do. I would recommend putting a round blank in the hat before trying to retain the shape of the crown. You probably thought of that yourself .

Hoping to see everyone in the community over there, or the BBS revisited if it doesn’t work out. The move was a surprise and sucks. I hope @Mister44 will continue the thread over there, but I know the subscription will be a barrier to many, and setting up on the same platform as some hate-peddlers is also a downer.

Thank you for sharing!

I like your builds, and choice of Gundams. does the wing zero transform? That would be an awesome gimmick. I also think how you cover for the broken piece on the G Gundam is really clever. It looks like it is preparing for a side kick, and I can’t even tell what was broken. Also, depending on what broke, there may be a way to fix it. I’ve broke a lot of models and parts, and learned to make repairs :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

That is definitely taking it to the next level, and make a model look really nice!

One trick I learned from a friend of mine who is a master (he enters modeling competitions with serious cash prizes) is to practice on kits you’re not invested in, like this kit from Aura Battler Dunbine.

Never really saw the anime, and some of the bug based mechs are cool, but most don’t really appeal to me. I got it a couple others at a garage sale for a song. You can practice technique and build, painting, chipping, weathering, battle damage, etc. without worrying about messing up. You can even go back and practice different techniques as your skills develop.

A nice thing about Bandai is the gundam models are rarely discontinued, so you could practice on the G, then get another one as time and finances permit.

This is what I actually bought the kit for:

Please don’t feel bad! :hugs: That’s part of the learning process when making models, and one reason I like the hobby so much. I’m always learning, always improving my skills, and there is always another opportunity to apply the skills you develop.and of course, something cool to look at when you are finished!

You are in good company: model makers made the original Star Wars trilogy so amazing!

Do you ever watch Solar Opposites? It’s a silly show about aliens living on earth. They get into all sorts of fish out of water shenanigans and sci-fi gadgetry.

One of the B story lines is the kids occasionally shrink people who have wronged them an put them into a habitat in their law. They eventually escaped and now live outside in the yard.

They are smaller in scale than your figures, but your pictures of one adventuring in the yard reminds me of that.

Hey - ever hard of Stikfas? They were fun, super poseable figurines. I ended up being pen pals (email pals) with the president of the company in Singapore for awhile.
