Finish line party! (The race officially ends in 30 minutes, but all the boats are in.) Loved looking at all these amazing vessels.
Sole entry in the Dragonboat division, frankly it looks super uncomfortable, even with stadium chairs. Time: 58:36
The Krakamaran, an odd contraption that looks like a Strandbeest on water. Winner pedal/SUP tandem, 38:21.
When I saw this boat pass my ramp a couple days ago, I wondered aloud “Is it Doom’s Word or Doom Sword?” and one of the paddlers gave me a disgusted look.
The winning boat is almost too long for a photo. Team division, time 36:57
Finally, tempt fate much?
ETA the Edmund Fitzgerald dropped out after just 141 miles

But did it make Whitefish Bay!?!
Those are excellent! I especially like the last one, “Fort T”. The way the orange cone pops and the light under the covered area. How did you paint the yellow foliage over the roof on the right?
Thanks! It was all done in watercolors but I have more experience in acrylics so I tend to lay it on thick. That part was just white & yellow paint dabbed on with a flat edged brush.
Banana for scale?
My last post about the MR340, at least for this year:
If any of my fellow happy mutants are into serious paddling (or know anyone who is) I highly recommend that you experience this event at least once. Yes, it’s grueling and often dangerous, but almost any healthy person of any age can finish if they train and prepare. (Men’s tandem division was won by a father and teenage son; some racers were in their 70s.) You don’t even need special equipment – plenty of bog-standard canoes and kayaks cross the finish line.
I’m not downplaying how challenging it is, just encouraging those who might have an interest.
As we say around here, See you on the river!
Day trip to the Aran Islands. Took the ferry in the morning then rented some bikes and bopped around for a few hours.
Despite the crappy weather (or as we say in Ireland, “weather”) we took another boat ride to try to see the Cliffs of Moher.
Ohhhh!!! Look at the COOOOOOWWWWWSSSS…
And the cliffs! NEAT!!!
As soon as I saw ARAN, the theme song for Father Ted started playing in my head.
The shipwreck is the same one from the Father Ted intro
Very nice, but do they have a low bridge?
I was in bed sleeping when my wife woke me up and said you have to see the sunset.
Oh alright but this better be good.
It was.
I’m sure there’s a scientific explanation what causes this type of sunset but I’m giving credit to a higher power.
That’s a beauty!
Unfortunately, red sunsets are usually due to smoke from wildfires. At least yours wasn’t that red for three hours before sunset, which is what we were getting here in 2020.
