I stared at that shelf for a while thinking how to solve the problem. A hundred bucks and a trip to Home Depot, this is what I came up with.
I missed the mark with the stain but it is temporary and my wife was happy.
He slept the whole time I was was building.
He can probably still get up there but at least things should stay on the shelf.

Sploot.
She spent two hours outside today. When I go inside to do something, she starts climbing the deck stairs to look for me. When I come back, she climbs down and plays in the grass again.
