He can have Wasilla.
… the other side of the debate
it sounds like only for five or so at most. they would have worked during the first few years, and then, once the problem was detected, they were pretty quickly replaced
of course, any of them being used would have been a loss for everyone
i swear, when i first read the headline, i thought it was: “palin wants alaksa back.” and i was very confused where it had gone.
Forget Trump. Ask every single Republican senator and Congressperson what they think of Russia’s claim on Alaska, and link it directly to Russia’s claim on Ukraine. Then ask why they are blocking aid to Ukraine. Would they also block aid to Alaska? Would they sell Alaska back?
Oh look, he’s claiming part of Canada too.
Depends on how seriously we could take Putin. At this point I am thinking “not serious at all”.
See, now that’s the kind of Art of the Deal thinking that will make America great again!
I don’t see how Putin putting a claim on Alaska furthers an agenda of reducing US aid to Ukraine…
I’ll give the combo deal with Houston AK just to the north as well. But hands off Palmer or Talkeetna.
Interestingly, there is still a fair population of eastern orthodox russian speakers in various small communities throughout the state.
I vaguely recall that Russian is the third most widely spoken language in Oregon
… uh oh
well, part oregon wants to join idaho in order to be closer, politically speaking, to moscow … so it tracks

Limited English Proficient is a bit of a caveat, but the tiny numbers can also mean that the order isn’t particularly stable from decade to decade.

WOLVERINES!!!
… Putin missed his chance then
This has been a favorite of Russian imperialists since Putin said it in 2016. Here’s the slogan accompanied by photos of Putin, a bear, the Russian flag and an outline of Russian borders (which, you’d think, kinda undermines the message) on a poster right next to the border crossing between Russian Ivangorod and Estonian Narva:
And even more on the nose, the same slogan used on an army recruitment poster in Tula, in a photo that dates back to at least 2019:
It’s meant for internal consumption, I’m pretty sure. To make the Russians think their country is mighty and great and going to take back everything the Russian Empire had. Or, just as likely, tell them that they are supposed to act like they believe all of this bullshit and bluster.
Ok, so Snopes is correct to point out that Putin’s decree is not about any specific location, but generally about former Russian property abroad. Alaska was brought up by way of interpretation - first by a Russian military blog Два майора, which suggested starting with Alaska, Ukraine, Moldova, Finland and a list of other places formerly occupied by Russia. This was mentioned in a daily update by the Institute for the Study of War, and from there it got a bit viral, getting mentioned in a US State Department press briefing, which is now getting covered by Russian media. For example, this article in Lenta points out that the entire exchange is a joke, but also helpfully provides context that in 2022 the speaker of Russian Duma stated that Alaska should be returned to Russia, also that the return of Alaska had been brought up by the spokesperson of Russian Foreign Ministry, and also quotes some historian who says that Russia should be getting parts of Nice, France because they belonged to the Romanovs.
In short: no, the law that Putin signed does not mean Russians will be going for Alaska. But Russians are definitely enjoying the implication that this is what it might mean.
