Even the classic spock did not let his logic override his humane side. And I really appreciate how the current iteration of the character as played by Ethan Peck is showing how Spock struggled with the balance in his two sides…
And of course, Wesley… well, Wil Wheaton has talked about how so much of the fandom bullied him and the kids who looked up to and identified with Wesley. All because he was a kid trying to figure out a way to be a smart kid in an adult world that is sort of antagonistic to those smarts. It’s not that he was smart that he was being bullied, but that he was not smart in the right way (purely logical, rational, devoid of emotion).
I think the important context is that he was not human, and despite being a non-human with vast psychological differences from humans, he was able on some level to appreciate humanity and humanism.
Well, he was half human, though… by the time of TOS he had pretty much sort of suppressed lots of his more human aspects of his personality. But SNWs is showing how that happened, I think…
But he was also meant to be a sort of outside critique of humanities failings, I think. A way to get at what it means to be human from the perspective of someone who was outsider by choice. They shifted that onto Data who wished to be human, but had the problem of no emotions. i think that really centers the importance of a balance between logic and emotion that you argued about…
