So that’s what that is! I saw one in a bathroom in Poland (Warsaw? Krakow? I don’t remember) when I was 19 or so. I’m still a little vague on the why of it.
I haven’t been able to find any authoritative sources, but the consensus speculation seems to be that there was an early 20th century German health fad having to do with the prevention of intestinal parasites. The bowls designed to facilitate inspection thereof just kind of stuck around long after anyone used them for that purpose. This may well be the origin of the Scheiss-porn stereotype famously propagated by Cartman’s mom.
