Me, now: “A sexually-transmitted monkeypox outbreak? That’s, uh… surprising.”

R0 of 1.0 (estimated upper limit) suggests not, but certainly can be locally scary, and up to 10% mortality is bad. There is an approved vaccine, but we know how that goes. Unlikely to become a major player, but will probably grab some attention. Let’s face it, the definition of “scary new disease” has evolved somewhat.

It’s far too early to say that it is sexually transmitted… All they know is that some gay men have been affected, not that it was transmitted during sex. Certainly, as it seems to be spread by bodily fluids, sex would increase the risk. However, it is not spread almost exclusively through sex like other STIs. It has been an epidemic in parts of Africa for decades. No indication there that sex was the primary culprit.
Also, not the first time that it has been seen outside Africa. There have been other outbreaks associated with bites from imported rodents. We are just more sensitised to this now, which is why it is causing a sensation.

The virus spreads through close contact and UKHSA is advising individuals, particularly those who are gay, bisexual or MSM, to be alert to any unusual rashes or lesions on any part of their body, especially their genitalia, and to contact a sexual health service if they have concerns.
Monkeypox has not previously been described as a sexually transmitted infection, though it can be passed on by direct contact during sex. It can also be passed on through other close contact with a person who has monkeypox or contact with clothing or linens used by a person who has monkeypox.
