Rare monkeypox disease popping up across Europe, one case in Boston

Apparently I’m the first, so here we go.

FOX news: “Monkey Pox is now the greatest plague since Obama the Muslim let Ebola into our nation! Biden is failing!”

One of our crack news peddling stations here in Boston Massachusetts, the hub of the universe, implied Monkey Pox is transmitted by Man-Man Love action.

Nice start but not quite enough racist perseveration on it being an African virus, or homophobic focus on the early sufferers maybe being gay. If you could roll in a little unfounded implication that the disease originated by people having sex with monkeys you’ll secure a writing gig with Tucker.

I’m concerned monkeypox may be regarded as the next or new HIV or, worse, AIDS, because of the way it’s being reported as currently predominant among bisexual, gay and men who have sex with men, and the current state of the world and fucked up dominance of right-wing politics and fascism.

Interesting fact: The smallpox vaccine is fairly effective against monkeypox, and is the standard for preventing the spread of the virus among those at risk of exposure.

As someone with a large ugly scar on my upper arm from the smallpox vaccination in my youth, I wonder if I’m still protected.

I vaguely recall the smallpox vaccine fades after a half dozen years or so. I too have the scar. Not as intimidating as a German fencing academy scar but kind of similar!

Monkeypox is not considered easily spreadable among humans. The World Health Organization notes that the longest documented chain of transmission in humans is just six generations—meaning that the last person infected in an outbreak was just six direct links away from the person initially infected.

The United Kingdom has identified nine cases, one of which is connected to recent travel to Nigeria, where monkeypox is endemic. But the other cases appear to have been infected within the UK and are all not linked to the travel-related case by contact or timing.

These two statements cause me to wonder if, once again, something has changed in the biology of this virus allowing it to more easily spread among humans. Right now, the sparse data makes any conclusions pretty near impossible. Either this will peter out and become a footnote in future viral studies, or there will be increased numbers of cases and more data. I vote for the former. I expect the latter.

All this covid-19 conspiracy talk has given me an idea…

Around 20 cases suspected out my way.

It’s getting around.

Is it racism or just fear that a disease endemic to the tropics has spread to temperate zones? The entire world gets worried whenever theres a new Ebola outbreak in sub-Saharan Africa, and that primarily impacts native Africans. The tropics around the world are where these kinds of virulent diseases originate. We’ve been trying to eradicate malaria for generations and that never pops up in Canada or the UK. I’m not dismissing racism as an important concern but dont put the cart before the horse.

now that’s a series i’ve never heard of.
