Without Fairuza Balk’s strangely hypnotic mouth/teeth/lips combo, it just won’t work for me.
There are three remakes, though of course the Streisand/Kristofferson version is pretty forgettable. It does seem to be one of those stories that every generation needs its own version of, for better or worse.
I do remember as a kid going to see The Last Remake of Beau Geste, not being old enough to get the joke.
I thought there were three total; the original in the 50s with Julie Garland, the one in the 70s with Saint Barbara, and then this latest one… so, the original, and two remakes? Or am I wrong? Is there a third remake squeezed in there somewhere?
The story was allegedly first told in the 1932 film What Price Hollywood? A Star is Born (1937 version) was not officially a remake, but some treat it as such. I’ve never seen WPH?, so have no idea.
ETA: Oh wait, I’m a little fuzzy headed right now. Lemme start again. Officially, there was the non-musical version from '37 (starring Frederic March and Janet Gaynor), then it becomes a musical, with the 50s Garland, the 70s Streisand, and the most recent version. And there’s the 1932 film (non-musical) mentioned above which may or may not count.
Surely now is the perfect time for a Cabaret remake?
Only as a horror movie, yo.
Yup. I wonder if it’s due to song licensing?
Besides the three musical Star is Borns, there were three Show Boats and three State Fairs.
Probably the winner for most musical remakes would be some fairytale such as Snow White, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland or such, but it might not be fair to consider Alice in Wonderland: An X-Rated Musical Fantasy a remake of Disney’s 1951 cartoon.
I’ve never seen the full movie, but now I’ve watched that clip… eesh.
I have zero problem picturing them in MAGA hats. Maybe we are living the sequel?
Was there singing?
What Price Hollywood does have some story elements in common with A Star is Born (up-and-coming starlet and drunken older director), but all four versions of A Star is Born are based on the same Wellman/Carson story.

Yes.
Seriously? That must be an amazing thing. Now I’m horribly intrigued.
Yep, but sadly no soundtrack release. So, you may have to go without hearing “What’s a Nice Girl Like You Doing on a Knight Like This?”
It’s 2019. I’m sure there are ways of tracking it down. I’m just not certain it’s worth the effort.
It’s posted on Pornhub; he can easily find it, if he’s actually that curious.
It’s better than the Tim Burton version of Alice, but what isn’t? I liked it as an intriguing oddity. It supposedly plays better in the edited non-hardcore version (which I’m perfectly willing to believe), but that particular version is probably difficult to find these days.
That would be cool, but don’t hold your breath.
Exactly.
I still dig it.
Now that you mention it, that’s probably a factor.
No, sorry; both are complete shit.
The porn version is worse IMO, because the sex scenes are actually boring.
O_O
Yeah, I’m not exactly hating on it. Quotable and a bit silly but definitely fun.
Yep, my affection is mainly out of nostalgia.
My kid wasn’t impressed, even though we’ve actually been to that boardwalk where it was filmed.
Nostalgia really does make us love some movies just that little bit more. I’ll admit to liking Point Break for pretty much the same reasons.
Cool visit, I’d go, but then I’d go to the Storybrooke town even if it was on my own
