A tidbit I forgot to include: Matheson came up with the inspiration for the story when he was leaving a part and grabbed a guy’s hat who had a much bigger head. That made him wonder what if it WAS his hat and he was just suddenly shrinking.

Jack Arnold also gave us “It Came From Outer Space”, “This Island Earth”, and “The Creature From The Black Lagoon”, as well as some silly British humor in “The Mouse That Roared”.

I’m not sure why it stuck. The thing that I would have expected to freak me out - the laser eye damage - I don’t even remember that. The thing that I remembered was the inside of the orb and the guy sacrificing himself to destroy it.
Adult me is wondering how the wife got pregnant in what would have been the middle of an 18 month trip.
