Rep. Ted Lieu plays Candace Owens' Hitler remarks on phone during House hearing on white nationalism

Thanks. Yes, I am aware of the grammatical niceties. It was more a point about the aptness of capital D as the Republicans are anti the Democratic party as well as being anti-democratic.

I always took “globalism” for yet another dog-whistle from “international Jewish conspiracy.” Isn’t Soros accused of being a globalist? Because unless that absolutely isn’t the case, since it’s Nazis we have to assume bad faith.

I’m sure that some people might mean ‘globalist’ to mean ‘internationalism’ or ‘the super rich screwing society’, but if the sheer number of Stars of David that Breitbart adds to their headlines every time they use the word ‘globalist’ is any indication, I think these days your interpretation is closest to the truth.

It is one of many things that the fascists recuperated from the left, removing any truth from it in the process.

In the context of the original post what I said made sense, the fascists also hate internationalism and alter-globalization and have not recuperated those because they cannot without there being some obvious contradictions in their beliefs. Instead they creep around at the fringes, hoping to capture some of the more naive and unwary people.

This is exactly why the sneakier ones use the language of generic populism to make the case for institutionalised racism and xenophobia, portraying greedpig right-wing politicians like Il Douche or Farage as champions of the ordinary working man.

Globalisation can be viewed legitimately as a condition that benefits the elites, and the more crafty right-wing populists use this as a jumping-off point to define elites as people of all economic classes who lean liberal or progressive (as opposed to the reality of their being wealthy and powerful people in general) and who have contempt for the needs of “ordinary people”. From there, for most right-wing populist it’s an easy trip to specify the true villains of globalism as “rootless cosmopolitans spreading their alien ideas of diversity”.

Someone who’s politically aware but unsophisticated, reading forums where (unlike this one) these ultra-nationalist ethnostate-loving sneaks aren’t called out on their BS, can be led down this poisonous garden path.

In her Hitler clip it sounds like what she’s describing as “nationalism” is just “patriotism”, and what she’s describing as “globalism” is just “imperialism.” I don’t get the impression she’s put much thought into any of this.

I don’t think any actual ‘thought’ is involved at all; she simply parrots whatever nationalistic bigots want her to say, for profit.

It just makes me think again about Sartre’s comment that the fascist is allowed to play with language because they know their opponents are the ones who have to be responsible. Someone who uses “nationalism” to mean patriotism in one context will almost certainly use “nationalism” to mean nationalism in another context, and will take positions that rely on that fluidity. More often than not they mean both at the same time, one for one audience and another for another.

Thus the defense “hey you took that out-of-context”

“the only valid context is the one we pick and choose in order to appear in the best light”

If Owens was worried about “being seen in the best light” maybe she should have had something done to remedy that tragic situation on top of her head.

Yes, I know it’s superficial, irrelevant and petty, but who shows up to a nationally televised congressional hearing with their 'do looking like they just rolled out of bed?

In my experience, if they’re talking about “globalization” they probably mean problems with free trade, megarich moving their money around, etc. If they’re talking about “globalism”, they probably mean international Jewish bankers plotting to destroy the white race.

Yes, but then you’d have to have ‘Repugnic’ too. Which would be … sort of, … OK I suppose.

guess then maybe she should have spent a few seconds acknowledging how bad it sounded, then explaining the context.

instead she attacked lieu, then the chairperson, said hitler was bad ( really? who could have guessed ), and told everyone to go watch two hours of some conference nobody cares about.

maybe i need to understand the context of her response better to understand the context of her original comments better. context all the way down.

Which is of course ironic, given how lack of context is one of the right’s best friends.

They heard intelligent people mention taking things out of context and realized that they could invoke the words without having to bother with the meaning. Like a milk snake batting it’s tail in dry leaves to sound like a rattlesnake.

Which is a little unusual. Because usually “Globalist” is used as a euphemism for “the vast Zionist banking conspiracy”. Just word replacement for anti-Semitic conspiracy theory statements,.

EDIT: Lurksnomore made the same statement. My bad.
