Ah the memories. I can’t remember whether I used goblin green or some sort of striking scorpion green in the 1990’s. But my goto recipe for orcs and goblins was one of those and the blue-green ink over the top with some highlights. You can see a couple on the left of this shot.

xkcd did a color survey many years back, where you’d give a color a name, and also include your sex. The results were basically that women have 1000 names for colors (think, “dark orchid”, “pale aqua”) and men have 10 (“blue”). There are only a very few colors that men named more often than women, and “goblin green” was a standout. I never knew why and now I do.

EDIT: my 1000 vs. 10 was not an especially accurate memory. See pic below.

… or not

Basically, women were slightly more liberal with the modifiers, but otherwise they generally agreed (and some of the differences may be sampling noise). The results were similar across the survey—men and women tended on average to call colors the same names.

I enjoy astronomy, and I was pointing out Saturn to a friend. “It’s the steady-glowing orange-ish one up there.” My elementary-school-age daughter was behind me and piped up “It’s really more of a dusty gold than orange.” She was correct, of course.
