Retired Pope Benedict XVI blames clerical sex abuse on the 1960s

My mom blamed Vatican 2 for the fact that I am a Unitarian.

I have a dumb question. Here seems as good a place as any to ask it. Is/was the prevalence of sex offenders in the Catholic priesthood higher than the general population? Did certain types of people seek out the Catholic priesthood for cover? Or was it that the Catholic Church unique in its spectacular systemic failure to not only not take any action on these matters but actually protect and promote offenders?

Because it’s not a christian thing but a religion thing. We know this abuse happens in most organized religious groups: mormons, JWs, jews, buddhists etc.

This. The Catholic Church believes that its law supersedes the laws of mere nations, and I’m inclined to believe that this was largely performative: namely all done for the sake of proving and creating precedent for that supremacy.

That’s one thing I find annoying about the whole “catoliks is teh homo peders”, something I believe the church helps perpetuate to distract the conversation from the real issue. As the man above said, their abuse statistics don’t particularly stand out against other religions or child related activities, and the bishop I remember being busted in SF had been molesting (irony?) underage girls.

The Church’s evil was in the culture and formal practice of placing their people above the law.

Continuing to not take Responsibility. But then I guess that’s what they have to do when confronted between the actions of God-directed clergy and some evil other making them do something against their will – ops, I mean against God’s will – which would be pretty much impossible, right, for anything to go against God’s will?
So they need to blame others for their own actions otherwise the whole organized scam breaks and they lose the income, social position and influence they currently enjoy. Which is not very Jesus. But then, it’s really about them, not you.

Of course. And the article mentions its not just a religious thing but more to do with trusted access to children.

I think I have said this here before…
But my point is if this was a world wide pizza chain that was diddling kids in the basement on the same scale, no one would still eat there and it is likely the entire corporation would be dissolved in a week. Society would demand every employee is jailed for life and many would take delight in terrible prison rape jokes.

But back in reality land, we have people taking their children to church multiple times a week and talk about boycotting target because of bathrooms. And this is from the “moral leaders” of our world who should be even less protected for abusing their trust.

It’s disgusting.

Wasn’t the deal supposed to be

  • You don’t have to be Pope anymore

  • We never see you or hear from you again

Fun related fact, Ratzo still lives (extravagantly) in the Vatican and heads the conservative opposition to Pope Francis and the Jesuit/social justice faction he’s seen as a part of. Here’s a fascinating article from a few months back that gives a good rundown.

He’s basically the first Pope in the history of the institution who actually did go fuck off—it’s all but unheard of for a Pope to just retire and hand off the job to someone else. And it was actually working out pretty well for him until he had to blow it by saying something stupid to remind everyone he’s still technically alive.

What? The name of the printer?

Hey, how many links do I have to follow to read the actual letter, instead of somebody’s analysis of what my opinion of the thing they don’t want me to look at should be?

The 1960s? Seriously? Because the whole thing could be avoided by simply revoking clergy celibacy.

It’s not like celibacy has anything to do with religion or worship. It was invented because priests were leaving church properties to their families in their wills, and the churches were losing serious investment lands and treasures. So to end this, the pope made up the celibacy excuse, creating a whole class of people with seriously dysfunctional repressed sexual desires.

The pope could end the problem with the stroke of a pen, but he doesn’t. Any abuse that takes place today can be entirely ascribed to him.

Utterly vile and ignorant religious people like this who are so far beyond even reason are something I’m thankful for.

If it weren’t for people like this I might actually still be on the fence with the whole God question, but in the face of overwhelming stupidity and hypocrisy seeing religion for what it was and then opening my eyes to how messed up the world really is became easy.

Thanks asshats!

Now if only we could treat clergy and police and anyone else in a position of power is equal as the guy on the street and just throw them in jail when they are caught doing this without any kind of privacy buffer

How then does he care to explain the incidences of abuse, some from the 1940’s, that were recently laid out like a laundry list in the Salina (KS) Diocese newspaper? Sit down, old man - you are a disgrace to your faith.
