That’s ghoulish as fuck; may they reap the ill that they would wish upon others, threefold.
and just generally because they’re anti science. not just disbelievers - because that would mean at least sometimes their views would align with the scientific, or rational view - actively contrary.
it’s a power thing. an in group / out group signifier. by tearing down rationalism, by valuing loyalty over rationalism, they attempt to create conditions where they control the narrative, and with the narrative the boundaries of the fight.
they can’t let rationality ever control the message, because that means they aren’t controlling the message. so they always have to take positions against rationalism.
if rationalism wins then liberalism wins because - even though it’s couched as a joke - reality does indeed have a liberal bias. ( ie. all people are created equally, capitalism needs controls, global warming is happening, etc. )
in this case, they’re once again eating up the conversation space. they are controlling the narrative.
we should be talking about nationalizing healthcare, about instituting a “war tax” and a wealth tax, nationalizing jobs - starting a geen new deal - coming out of this crisis to get everyone to work as quickly as possible… but look what we’re talking about instead
Totally.
One of the profound ironies in this whole episode is the degree to which any appropriately proactive response is successful in reducing the death toll is a degree to which these markets-uber-alles types can play victims and cry about over-reaction wrecking their precious bubble economy, (probably academic at this point anyways).
And they’ll get it. They really, really will. The Democrats have shown for almost half a century that they WILL NOT balk at anything. ultimately. They’ll sob crocodile tears for us. They’ll “feel our pain”. They’ll give us a nice rousing speech and move just a little closer to whatever filth and evil the Republicans are demanding this week. And then the next week. And the next. But they will fight hard against any move even back to the modestly liberal days of the 70s let alone the New Deal.
That’s what Moderate Centrists do. They go from whatever position they have now halfway to whatever the very worst of the people they should be opposing want.
“¡Muera la inteligencia! ¡Viva la Muerte!” (“Death to intelligence! Long live death!”)
– José Millán Astray
(fascist founder of the Spanish Legion under Franco)
Not a big fan of history repeating tropes, but damn it’s annoyingly familiar
All I need…
Thank you. Variance in response characteristic behavior succinctly documented.
Only if you’re getting that 6% monthly. You need an annual compounded rate a little over 100% to make your figures work.
I always figured that was a qualifying trait for being Home Secretary. You really want your biggest bastard doing that job.
Odd how it never occurs to them that if they were at least to give the appearance of rationality - if not actually be rational - they could always be sure of controlling the message much more than they can now.
Except that really is the tenor they’re trying to strike. This ghoulish, paternalistic, financial advisor saying “I know you love collecting Precious Moments figurines, but you really need to start saving for retirement” except it"s human lives and imagunary stock market gains. It’s just totally bananas that this side of the mouth fits on the same face as the side whinging about death panels and abortion. I mean, they’ve even abandoned internal consistency at this point. At least in words. In deeds the message has never wavered. The Rich Must Be Rich, and Workers Must Never Have Rights.
How long until they talk about renewal and carousal?
We mentioned it in the Ongoing thread a couple of days ago but Boingers are generally ahead of the curve…
Old and infirm people: throw yourselves bodily into the grinding wheels of commerce. Your sacrifice shall be commemorated by this cool hat I bought at H&M.
Again we’re faced with the fascism parallels, from Umberto Eco’s essay Ur Fascism https://www.pegc.us/archive/Articles/eco_ur-fascism.pdf
- Irrationalism also depends on the cult of action for action’s sake. Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation. Therefore culture is suspect insofar as it is identified with critical attitudes. Distrust of the intellectual world has always been a symptom of Ur-Fascism,from Goering’s alleged statement (“When I hear talk of culture I reach for my gun”) to the frequent use of such expressions as “degenerate intellectuals,” “eggheads,” “effete snobs,”“universities are a nest of reds.” The official Fascist intellectuals were mainly engaged in attacking modern culture and the liberal intelligentsia for having betrayed traditional values.
Years ago, on a Zig Ziglar podcast, a businessman said that abortions had to be stopped because these unborn children eventually would grow up to be customers. No, I’m not making this up.
The greedy want rid of the elderly, the primary mortalities of COVID-19, because many have paid-off real estate, stocks, and gold. Release of all of these would depress the market so the very rich could buy low-low-low and sell at extortionate rates.
These are the same xtian crazies who have espoused, and practiced, murder of newborns and children with birthmarks (mark of the beast, y’know) and of girl children with minor deformities that they can claim are caused by Satan.
I’d resign from the human race if I knew where to file the papers.
They aren’t just “weighing the pros and cons”. Don the Con has made it national policy. He’s declared that the worst is over and in a couple of weeks everything will go back to normal. He’s done that as we have just started hitting really interesting exponential growth and aren’t doing jackshit at the Federal level to slow the outbreak.
