The difference is that Jack Chick would place himself in his own hell…
and hell is a fiction.
Prison rape is real.
Fuck, considering how his Satanic Panic claims brought persons to horrifying arrest, I wouldn’t doubt that he was responsible for many persons having been raped while incarcerated.
Back in the day a group of us were at Denny’s super late after a D&D game when some missionary types were seated next to us. They bequeathed our table with the chick tracts about the game and enthusiastically told us we were going to hell.
This continued until one of them told us we could summon the devil with the books on the table. I just as enthusiastically held out a random D&D guide and asked where because I hadn’t been able to find the right spell yet.
“The Catholic Church created Islam, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as well as the Jehovah’s Witnesses. He also says the Catholic Church was responsible for the Holocaust, the founding of Communism, Nazism, and the Ku Klux Klan; starting the World Wars; masterminding the 1917 Russian Revolution, the Great Depression and the assassinations of U.S. Presidents Lincoln and Kennedy.”
Day-um! I have never been so proud to be a Catholic! And all for only a buck a week in the collection basket!
Seriously, their life can’t have been sunshine… but the lives of the people around them are objectively worse for the person’s present.
Similarly, yeah Fred Phelps was unhappy, but beat every singe child he had repeatedly until they bled, abused them mentally as well, IDGAF about any faux repentance, they’re all better off to the world dead.
I feel kind of weird about his death. I grew up with all this stuff. The church(es) my family went to would hand out Jack Chick tracts on different faiths to kids and give them the “homework” of reading the tract and talking about what they learned about that religion from the tract.
Despite everything (growing up in a crappy situation made worse by Evangelicals and wanting to be a good Christian), I didn’t hand out any tracts or give people a hard time. Something in me always knew it was wrong to harass people about their religion.
Thankfully Eris found me and I’m doing better. Hail Eris.
Just as they are doing today, Christian conservatives ramped up their hate mongering after Stonewall distributing pamphlets filled with dire warnings of the dangers of homosexuality and the “coming revolution” invading the mainstream.Take a look at the religious rights homophobic comic entitled Gay Blade published by Chick publications 3 years later that predicted an ominous future filled with gasp…gay marriage,
Ugh - my dad got out in the middle of traffic to pick up what he thought was a $20 bill (in the 80s), turned out to be a business card that looks like a folded bill.
Truely, noone shit tips like a vocal Christian. We had one of these the other day. The staff response was “fuck Jesus”, so I’m pretty sure it backfired.
Anyway: it can hardly be denied that Mr. Chick's views were questionable, or that Satanic Panic was a thing, but is there really any kind of causal relationship between the two? Bothered About Dungeons and Dragons, at least, didn't need any help from Chick to get rolling and keep rolling.
Urgh… Bad childhood memories. There was one house that I guess my Dad felt sorry for the people who lived there, because he always made us go up to the door and get a f-ing Chick tract. We were told not to bother reading it, but we had to play the game. As far as we were concerned it cut into valuable sugar harvesting time, and was creepier than the houses genuinely trying to be creepy. All of the neighborhood kids knew what was up, and nobody would willingly go to the door.
Now, I kind of wished that I had saved a pile of them just for the “WTF?!?” factor.
I kind of want to try tipping with one of those fake tens, but set it down in an obvious way so they know it’s a fake note right away, but when they pick it up, there’s a twenty folded in and a note saying, “That was a real roller coaster of emotion for you, huh?”
