because it was disingenuous all along. many arguments like “free speech”, “small government”, “family values”, “parent’s rights”, “welfare queens” are gamed out to figure what will flatter people’s personal sensibilities and give cover to the racial dynamics underneath
it’s not dissonance to them, because they never believed it at any time. what they hoped is that we’d believe it.
