I feel so bad for people who have to live though war…this is terrifying.
Bye bye credit cards & reliable banking system. Hello paying $75 for a loaf of bread in Moscow
(video posted yesterday)
If you don’t have a cash cushion at home, you should get it if you can. Russia is very good at cyber warfare, I figure (esp after the Anonymous attack) that we will have our financial services, among others, targeted sooner than later.
Facebook trying to do something good?
Facebook is doing nothing it sounds like. Russia says they will restrict their use of it. Facebook is doing usual content mod and Russia doesn’t like it
so…just the bare minimum like normal then
ETA: I really, really recommend the Garbage day post that I linked above. A snip:
“Facebook has set up “a Special Operations Center” to “respond in real time.” God, I wish I loved anything as much as Facebook loves setting up content moderation command centers.”
Oh good they are going to do something about Russian disinformation campaigns…
Oh God no! They had a “Special Operations Center” to “respond in real time.” to election disinformation too! They just say shit so they seem busy
Facebook’s “Special Operations Center” in action
What’s the white powder going into the bottles?
Ah, googles. Probably Styrofoam as a thickening agent to help it stick to stuff. Well, TIL.
IIRC, it also helps it burn longer, too. Sticking is good, as if you’re throwing it against heavy armor, most of it will pour off and burn up on the ground.
Maybe one of the participants in this thread, like @knoxblox or @anon29537550 or @anon61221983 would consider splitting this off into an “Ongoing Ukraine Discussion?” I’m not leveled up enough to do it, otherwise I would. This is a lively discussion, and the topic will close in a couple days. I’m guessing there will be more to discuss, unfortunately, after that.
I think when this topic closes another general one on the invasion will be opened up by @beschizza or one of the other Authors. Splits are usually used for discussions or comments that go off-topic but which can’t fairly be flagged as an attempted de-rail.
that makes sense. the gop can’t win with a free and fair democracy either.
Another glimpse of what life is like for Ukrainian residents from the Guardian’s Shaun Walker, who is currently near Kyiv:
I’ve just driven back across Ukraine from Lviv to close to Kyiv. A lonely drive in my direction but still packed roads going west as many escape from the Russian military action. At the border between Lviv and Rivne regions, a few hours’ drive from the western border with Poland, there was a queue stretching back several miles as soldiers checked documents.
Closer to Kyiv, many people are avoiding the main roads west out of the capital due to the fact that some Russians are expected to come in that way, and are taking the back roads to the south. Along these roads I’ve just seen locals building makeshift checkpoints and barricades of sandbags.
On the radio, one of the items on the news was instructions on how to make Molotov cocktails.
