I had a coworker tell me the same thing, in so many words. Putin is more in-line with his political beliefs than that asshole Biden! Same guy was trashing NATO, too. I asked him if he knew what the purpose of NATO was, and he couldn’t give me a clear answer.

Fuck this timeline.

We can also start our own then and pin this as the first post. The thread we create will stay open X (I think 30 minimum?) days past the last post - so it will stay around as long as the discussion stays lively

Well, classically “keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down.” But since 1992 it’s changed quite a bit. Perhaps now “keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans fully engaged in European processes.”

Yep. Poor man’s napalm.

TBF, I always thought the “keep Germans down” part was done by the time of the Berlin Airlift. Now, it’s probably going to be “get the Germans off Russian natural gas” for awhile.

Guardian liveblog:

The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, and the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, are discussing a place and time to hold talks, according to a spokesperson for Zelenskiy.

The spokesperson said that Ukraine is ready to talk about peace and a possible ceasefire, Reuters further reported.

Earlier today, the US State department cast doubts about whether Russia had legitimate plans for diplomacy, saying that Russia must stop bombing Ukraine first.

“Now we see Moscow suggesting that diplomacy take place at the barrel of a gun, or as Moscow’s rockets, mortars, artillery target the Ukrainian people,” said the US state department spokesperson Ned Price. “This is not real diplomacy. Those are not the conditions for real diplomacy.”

The Guardian has now removed the statement that Putin and Zelenskiy are discussing a time and place for talks.

The US Defense Department says that Russia has begun an amphibious assault on Mariupol in Donetsk Oblast.

Isn’t it plain old Western hubris to think that some we, only our lilly-white WE can solve it and that doing just that is our white-man’s-burden to see it through?

Starting an all-out war now in Ukraine will not bring peace but might spill out over the whole of the former Warsaw Pact, Finland, China, and the Middle East. Hundreds of thousands dead and cool heads might prevent that now.

Realistically Russia is bleeding itself dry with an economy that is dead on it feet and a totally unmotivated population. China is also in serious trouble with a huge investment bubble about to burst and a pressure cooker of hundreds of ethnic minorities.

You know what could bind these populations, give them a reason to stand behind their respective leaders, even boost their economies?? War with a hated enemy…

This is exactly what happened in Russia in both WWi WWII!

I see this as an out of control bush fire: Isolate it, let it burn out. Sending some poor people in with buckets of sand will only see more killed.

Don’t get me wrong, I like nothing of this but reality does not care about what we like. The Ukraine situation had a very complicated run up where the NATO and the EU maybe could have done more but that is all water under bridge now anyway.

This is now, this is reality, the fire is here and we can’t stop it without making it worse. In real life not every problem has a solution.

Took me a while to spot it…

While I agree with this wholeheartedly, I’m reminded of the Christmas Bombings in Vietnam. So, we don’t have a lot of moral authority.

We couldn’t start all-out war in Ukraine now if we wanted to, because Putin beat us to the punch.
