From the reports that are coming in, yes. He thought it would be a walk in the Iraq
The point is that the Russian aerospace industry is capable, but it doesn’t operate in a vacuum.
Of course, their atomic weapons still work. I’m absolutely not keen to seen them deployed over or near my country, but I lived decades under the policy that where I live would be ground zero for Western nukes.
That is what we were saying, and in my post I said that I knew that the pencil story was not true, but that it captured the spirit of Soviet aerospace - practicality and competence.
Tamsin_Bailey’s comment you responded to was saying the opposite of what you implied “rolling over” - she was saying that doom and gloom about an inevitable WW3 was not productive and that it got in the way of talking about what CAN be done. Something that I think matches very well with her avatar
I apologize if I came off short earlier, but your two seemingly hostile comments that seemed to imply a deliberate misreading of what was actually said were startling. There are a lot of people online now that are trying to derail discussions, and I apologize if I was a little tense, but I think that more closely reading all of the thread might result in fewer misunderstandings
So where are the truck-mounted lasers we were talking about just a few months ago?!!! Ukraine needs them!
Zelenskyy is either going to die shortly or win all of the elections.
That sounds like something that would cost forty billion dollars each and have to be mounted on a ship so they could pump sea water through it to keep it from melting
He’s currently fighting for first place for most bad ass leader with Jacinda Ardern…
Khrushchev was a funny looking guy
Especially when played by Buscemi…
But, I’ll argue that prior to Gorby, he was the first premier who attempted to change the situation in the Soviet Union and improve life for the average citizen. He tried some basic reforms and lost his position as a result.
Oh yeah, that was just a Fargo reference.
I agree that as far as Soviet Premiers go he was one of the better ones. De-Stalinization cannot be praised enough, and made some attempts to build some kind of relationship with the West and managed to navigate what was probably the most dangerous period in human history while in office.
It’s been like 20 years since I’ve seen that movie… Probably more…
My personal fave… Gorby did the most for reform, but only Nikita debated Nixon in a kitchen…
Only Nikita could go to Nixon
As a cold war historian, I love a good cold war joke…
Cold war and punk rock historian
Well… yeah…
