Yeah, as I was looking at the chart I was thinking about the differences between the first days of the Iraq war and this, and the difference largely comes down to indiscriminate shelling and bombing (in Iraq’s case things like 500lb shells dropped onto markets).
I hope that Putin wants to maintain more of the existing infrastructure than we did, but anything is possible at this point.
If you really want to disgust yourself with our fawning press and the horror of the war crimes that were committed then I recommend this random contemporary article/journalistic handjob

Newsweek is no longer the magazine we grew up with. It has gone through some very strange transformations as print media dies and is now owned by the same people that own The International Business Times. I will, for my own amusement link to a pretty good article about it in Forbes (amusing to me since Forbes is a similarly debased zombie entity)
