Ukraine now claims that 4,300 Russian troops have been killed over the first three days of this war. The figure cannot be confirmed independently, and Russia, living in an alternate universe, still officially claims zero casualties, but if the number is even remotely correct - in the same order of magnitude - it really means a catastrophe for Russia. In comparison, the US-led coalition forces in Iraq lost 4,825 troops over nearly nine years. During the worst fighting of the 1979-1989 Soviet war in Afghanistan, about 8,000 Soviet troops were killed per year. The closest match for the way things are going in Ukraine now is the 1939 Winter War in Finland where USSR lost nearly 26,000 troops in the course of just over three months.
That’s a whole lot of families in Russia who are going to be asking just what the fuck their loved ones were sent into Ukraine for.
Belarus did not seem all that stable not too long ago. But apparently Russia is not concerned that this could backfire in any way.
:The deputy commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces Yevhen Moisiuk has issued a video appeal, in Russian, to Russian soldiers:
“Think about why you are here, what are you fighting for, and what you want to achieve? I hope you’ve realised that nobody wants you here and there is no reason for you to be here,” he said.
“Believe me: our cause is just, and you are just a tool in the hands of your government. We are giving you the chance to return to your families, and not to lose your life and dignity.
“Lay down your weapons and put your hands in the air, so that our soldiers and civilians understand that you have heard us. This will be your ticket home. Go and defend your own country, and don’t destroy ours.”
Belarus about to join Russian invasion, says former Ukrainian defence minister
Andriy Zagorodnyuk, Ukraine’s former defence minister, says Belarus is about to declare war on Ukraine, writes Luke Harding in Lviv.
Zagorodnyuk reports:
“Republic of Belarus is highly likely to join the Russian war against Ukraine. On Russian side. There is an information about airborne troopers from Republic of Belarus loaded on the planes to enter Ukraine.
This is a terrible development as it involves a country, which until very recently was a great friend of Ukraine; which people always considered Ukraine as a brotherly nation. Ukraine and Belarus has never been to war one with another in their many hundred years of history.
We believe that the only reason for that decision was personal demand from President of Russia, which completely depends from Putin in its policy.”
This guy has accomplished so much with this invasion. He managed to strengthen NATO, change German defense policy, unite Europe, increase Ukrainian nationalist sentiment… Too bad I don’t think those were his goals.
If the takeover attempt fails he’s also going to ensure that Ukraine is fast-tracked into both NATO and the EU. Finland (which Putin also believes should be part of the Russian empire) is now on its way to joining NATO as well.
I think I remember Mr. Trump making threats to shrink NATO, saying that Europeans should pay to have Americans’ protection. It seems that everything has changed even in a few years.
After calling Putin’s action in Ukraine ‘genius’, Trump changes tone and calls Russian attack ‘terrible’.
Former US president made a comment in CPAC last Saturday after being criticized by members of his own Party. He came back to brag that this war wouldn’t have happened if he were president, but as we all know, he lost the last election.
It wasn’t quite the walk through the park that Mr. Putin had been expecting.
nope, not a walk in the park at all. Ukraine put up a lot more resistance than anyone thought. I just saw this tweet and good news if true
Looks like Putin is still posturing…
I hope so. But I’ve read that other offers for peace talks have been rebuffed or even unconfirmed by the Ukrainian government.
Will this adventure, which seems to be quite expensive, be the beginning of the end of the Putin Era?
Russia does not seem to have gained air superiority, and yet they are pushing forward with a ground invasion. This seems like a very unusual tactical blunder, and makes me wonder if the much-vaunted Russian Air Force has the kind of readiness that would even make air superiority worthwhile.
