That was my thought. There seems to be a sizable number of Russian soldiers who don’t want to be there.
Hopefully that message to the Russian soldiers works as intended, but I winced just a bit when he was saying that every Ukrainian is armed and that the Russians will be shot at from every window. If the Russian soldiers believe that then the ones that don’t desert or surrender will be all the more likely to feel justified shooting indiscriminately and killing non-combatants with zero regard for collateral damage.
This is apparently fake, as pointed out in the replies. The article claiming that Gerasimov had been fired was dated yesterday, but today he appeared in a meeting with Putin.
Wow. You get the Swiss to do ANYTHING other than deposit your money, you done fucked up.
Switzerland, which is traditionally a neutral country, will “very likely” join other countries in sanctioning Russia, president says
I have no idea if this is true, but explains some things if it is…
I’m just wondering how it would even be seen. It’s not like a leaflet dropped from the sky, one would need unrestricted access to internet which I doubt Russian commanders would be keen on allowing.
A friend of mine just heard from a mutual friend of ours. I am redacting stuff for privacy, but wanted to post this because it really drives home how close this all is. We are all just degrees away from people that are directly involved in this. You also probably know someone that has friends or family directly being affected and at risk in this conflict
ETA: Sister and boyfriend are in a bomb shelter at the moment, but still safe
the foreign policy article may well hint at Russia’s general attitude towards its nationalities.
descriptions of Ukraine as “the breadbasket of the Soviet Union” feed into a sort of lazy “geopolitics” that tends to subjugate the wishes of individuals to a larger imperial purpose. (Ratzel, the geopolitician favored by Dugin, valorizes the peasantry as the essence of a nation, forgetting that a great many people, including hismself, have no wish to be peasants)
Apparently a lot of this sort of material is making it into Russia via social media, and especially Telegram and other encrypted messaging aps. All on smartphones, which apparently the Russians are having difficulty cutting off. A lot of it is being sent directly by Ukrainians or Russians in Ukraine to family and friends in Russia.
That’s part of why so much of the Ukrainian government’s announcements and messaging is going through Twitter and what have. Because Russians can see it.
Earlier the Ukrainian government was pushing to have European carriers cut off/block Russian devices from the roaming networks. Specifically because the Russian troops have their phones and are using them to communicate and coordinate.

Now, if we can just get them to do a little more of that antifa work here at home!
(Not trying to downplay how great it is that they are going to help, just…blindspots)
(To carry on the Wonka theme. Nothing like using the works of anti-Semites to call for the death of other anti-Semites!)
I think it is not so much are stopping them from going, but about prosecuting them after the fact. Some places have laws against fighting for foreign nations, or against mercenaries (imagine that) that might be violated, even on a technicality by going to help.
My feeling is that the intended target of the video is probably other Ukrainians.
Boosting Ukrainian morale is as important as sapping the Russians of thiers.
