Similar story for me. Canadian infantry, early 80s. Came to realize war bad after reading a lot of “speculative fiction”, such as Phillip K Dick, Harlan Ellison, etc. And discovering punk music. And a few LSD adventures that provided a lot of clarity about the way of the world.
