Basically he launched the missles to show Xi Jinping what a powerful leader he is.

American politicians seem to think that the rest of the world will forget how powerful America is without regular shows of strength.
For instance, when you hear someone talking tough on Iran by saying “all options are on the table”, remember that the Iranians never presume otherwise.

That was just a bonus. He launched the missles to stop the incessant drumbeat of news tying him and his crooked administration to the Russians and Putin. And the most galling thing is that it worked.
