Saying "Brits" is derogatory, according to Scottish conservatives

Don’t call me a merkin :upside_down_face:

Why do you think they are Scottish? They could be English Conservatives who moved to rural Scotland.

There does seem to be an inexplicable hardcore of 2000 Tory voters in Glasgow Central.

According to the World Health Organization in 2008, the male life expectancy at birth in the Calton area of Glasgow between 1998-2002 was 54 years.

Considering the French have been calling the English “les Fuckoffs” for years (it’s not “les Rosbifs” any longer), calling them brits sounds innoccuous to me. Remind me, is “sassenach” derogatory?

Sasanach is the irish word ( And i think the scottish Gaelic) for “Englishman”. If you’re speaking either of those languages then it there isn’t anything derogatory about the work.

If someone is using the word while speaking English they are unlikely to be saying something complimentary but it is not an offensive slur.

As opposed to “British” “Britain” or “English,” which are frequently used in Irish songs in a positive context

I am in a Facebook group called “Na Sasanaigh Are At It Again” which is definitely meant to be derogatory though

Technically it means lowlander, but the lowland Scots really don’t like it when you call them that.

In Irish it technically means Englishman which is its dictionary defintion.

Which is derived from “saxons”

In this alternate universe, I’m very curious to know what calling someone a “BritBox” would connote. Or would it be more like “shut yer britbox.” Perhaps that would be to mock a non-English person who was sounding too English for the taste of their mates.

WWI, I believe.

The OED has a 1904 quote comparing it to a shortened form of “Japanese” that later became popular during world war ii.

Scottish Tories don’t like the nasty word, eh? Honestly, I’m surprised all three of them managed to agree on something.

Over time Buttercup realized that when Westley said “brits” he was really saying “f***in’ brits”

As a brit, this seems like someone trying to start a culture war*, that they’ve definitely already lost:

Apologies for posting The Sun, but it shows that even the right wing twats don’t think ‘Brits’ is an insult.
Plus, this is Scotland we’re talking about, they have way more inventive swearwords to call the English if they want to be insulting.

*(to distract us from starting a class war, natch)
