Scholastic represents Harry Potter in US

Oh, the irony!

That’s not the only irony. Their CEO, Peter Warwick, has a doctorate in African Studies.

This isn’t even the first time this year that Scholastic has done something stupidly anti-diversity…

When the dollar is worth more than diversity to a company its time for a new company. Throughout history POC and LGBT+ have been erased from history, from art, from archaeology, and the frightened and hate filled people clinging to their book of myths that they claim is the word of their god. More than ever we need to be recognized as equal citizens due equal respect.

Man, I remember my kids going to the Scholastic bookfairs about seven years ago, at two different schools. Most of what they sold were those stupid books with a bunch of plastic crap hanging off in little bags or boxes. Also, a lot of books with colorful clip art and stock images. The time for Scholastic has definitely passed.

Book burning was a hobby of Hitler’s. I always wonder if the shoe was the other foot; and conservative, close minded people were the ones that were not wanted. And books about them would be banned or burned. Banning and burning …rise above people.

Its Not GIF

And that’s the point. They are seeking to not only ban/burn books, but to eliminate entire categories of people… Most of us who are on the left or are liberal have no interest in book bans or people bans. We just want to live our lives without having to worry about this kind of thing. People are welcome to believe whatever, but it crosses the line when they start to try and use the state to punish those they don’t like. Right now, there aren’t any comparable movements on the left, it’s all aimed at preserving people’s basic human rights, and not letting fascist ideology be part of the normal political discourse… This is NOT a problem of “both sides” in other words and frankly, it has never been.

Who is that addressed to? Hopefully, you mean the people current doing the banning and the burning.

Yes. Rise above is for thise who seem to only make things muddier. Rise above how you were raised . rise above thecwaynit used to be. Rise up and look really look at others. I think if you do, you will be delighted. Maybe not the first time. Lol but soon.

Well, we did a good job of keeping them out so far, so…

Again, WHO do you mean, specifically are you addressing? People HERE? Are we the ones who need to “rise above”? You’re not being all that clear, merely making wide, sweeping comments aimed at pursing a form of civility that ignores the actual context of what’s happening…

My apologies for the snark if English is not your first language.

Personally, I would love to have the option to rise above people, but it seems we’re stuck with them.

Come on, where’s the usual chorus of people lining up to exclaim “It’s not censorship if a private company’s doing it. They’re just choosing what books to sell”

It turns out, relying on corporations to police free expression wasn’t such a good idea after all. If Scholastic, or Amazon, or Wallmart take exception to your book, then it can be silenced just as effectively as if your local Republican 451 committee took it out of the library.

And if you think that corporations are scared off by “diverse” books, just wait until you see how scared they are by books about labour history, or trust-busting, or (whisper it) socialism.
