It does that without murdering hundreds of thousands of people, which is what Scott Atlas was suggesting we do to reach herd immunity. Which as @gatto notes isn’t how it works…
But welcome to boing boing, I guess.

Ouch. Sort of sad how their plans on attending Hitler Youth Summer Camp in 1945 were cut short.
I’ve searched for ages to find the image of an antivax protester pictured in the i Monday or Tuesday.
In brief, her placard read: 90% effective, 99% survive, don’t be an idiot. (so choose, in her opinion)
This was an ANTI-vaxxer.
The paper couldn’t be arsed to point out the flaw in her maths.
This is pretty much the only newspaper I trust anyway, so, … lost my thread due to losing the will to GAF.
I’d take those odds, especially considering I’d be protecting people who can’t take those odds.
…here we are now, entertain us…
and then, obviously, die.
I think she was missing the simple math here.
Yes, 99% survive the virus.
So of 60Mil Brits, we lose 600,000 to gain herd immunity.
She’s claiming 90% efficacy of vaccine is somehow worse.
But if 90% are now immune to Covid, then only 10% of population is susceptible, at a survival rate of 99%.
That means 6,000 deaths.
So, math.
p.s. I’m not sure I got that totally right, so please feel free to correct where necessary.
I was agreeing with you (and your math), 10 percent who can still get covid, and 99% of that 10% end up with essentially a bad cold?
I like those odds indeed.
Although, importantly, you may well lose 600,000 to learn that you can just get reinfected anyway, there is no herd immunity. We’ve been using what is being called the “herd immunity” approach on the common cold and influenza since time immemorial, and yet none of us are immune. Disease, left on their own either die out or become endemic and there is really no reason under the sun to think this current coronavirus will do the former.
That was my problem with the antivaxxers original argument.
Though to be fair, you put it a lot more elegantly than me.
I bet anti-vaxers are anxious for early release of a toxic vaccine so they can shout, “Told ya so!” Yikes.
Even better, that’s the worst case scenario assuming 100% exposure. As you approach 100%, the likelihood of exposure drops nonlinearly, so fatality rate drops to almost zero in the population.
There are very few things I like less than Nirvana’s ‘music’ but I clicked that infernal heart icon anyway.
