For me it’s obvious that he looks where the camera was, then slowly drags his hand as though scratching, but making sure his fingers end up specifically positioned before taking his hand down. If he had hadn’t looked directly into the camera right before doing it, I might have been a bit more skeptical.
Am I just crazy?
I’ve scrubbed the video and watched it frame-by-frame, and from his expression as he first faces the camera, to the way the move goes down, I have zero doubt it was intentional.
But so many people on Twitter are standing up for him, trying to prove that because it looks like the “Okay” symbol, and that Obama, Hillary and Rachel Maddow have made the same gesture, that it’s “not a big deal”, etc.
I’ll admit, this is the first time I’ve heard of this gesture being a hate symbol, but it also isn’t the first time the alt-right have co-opted a non-hate symbol for subversive hateful purposes.
