I don’t know if I’d make a sweeping categorization like that. But I’d say gay men and trans women tend to face more violent discrimination, statistically, than gay women and trans men, and that part of that trend is likely rooted in some deeply ugly misogyny.
I wonder what sort of hate campaign the internet could run against the daily fail, or perhaps even Murdoch’s whole empire…
If I recall violence in transgender circles is super high, but is more impacting on transfemine folks, and people of color. The whiter and more masculine you are, the less violence you face.
It’s because they think transgender women are just men trying to have an excuse to peep on women, I guess?
These are probably the same kind of people that think gays are trying to recruit their children.
As the other poster pointed out, it’s probably a privilege thing, primarily.
I think a lot of transgender men can visually fade into the background of society. Testosterone is a helluva hormone, and the majority of transgender men I know are read as cis gender men pretty fast.
Also, men just don’t get the scrutiny physically a woman would. I think that extra scrutiny women receive about their physical appearance makes it harder on transgender women. I have just as many little ways to clock me as trans in public, but nobody looks for them.
Ever heard their rhetoric- “if I had known when I was a young man that all I had to do to get into the women’s locker room was dress like a girl, I’d have done it! (to learing cheers/boos)” - it’s both a “crime” they can imagine & one they themselves have thought about perpetrating.
I also think there is an unhealthy dose of self-hatred in there as well. How often have far right male opponents of X been found to have been committing X that they & their party would consider same/similar (be they wrong or not).
Hindsight: Say ‘hi, talk tomorrow’ to the reporter, call a more trans-friendly newspaper (preferably the Mail’s competition), come out to them instead.
Jesus Daily Fail, what did the Wachowskis every do to you?
I mean there were the Matrix sequels, but we all know that they and George Lucas are going to a special hell for that.
Seriously though, when is that news organization finally going to get its comeuppance? Translation: How do we make that happen?
Edit:
Think about perpetrating? Try perpetrating in the most asinine manner possible.
The what now?
I started google’n it and it got very depressing very fast…
Reactionaries don’t actually care about this. It’s just a convenient cudgel to use to harm trans women - and especially to gin up during Prez election years. It’s no accident that all these “bathroom bills” are being introduced around the country right now. Just as all the gay marriage bans were ginned up by W, Rove & Ken Mehlman during that election cycle.
If the concern was really about safety - they’d acknowledge that trans women are more likely to be victims than most anyone else - that our rates of violent criminality are the same as cisgender women - that no municipality or state that passed non discrim legislation reports any problems with trans women and criminal behavior in rest rooms decades after many have been passed - and they’d ask themselves why no one of the 300,000 cis women who have abused children have never been barred from rest rooms. That’s more than the entire population of trans women in the US. The real risk isn’t with trans women.
The real risk is the violence towards us this will gin up - like what happened to Chrissy Polis. A trans women group assaulted for using a rest room. It was a single user women’s room at that.
Someone in Washington state just did that. Conservative troll dude hit a ladies locker room, and argued it was his legal right to do so.
I was surprised this one didn’t get mentioned here recently.

Word is that he found out that someone he grew up with - and didn’t know had transitioned - met with him. Along with some trans kids and their parents. It’s harder to believe crap about people you actually know.
They tried that in Maryland a few years ago when they passed the statewide bill there.
Hey - I’m willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt - he just has to transition.
Privilege? Nah, I think you’re reaching for something too intellectual there, especially since your average homophobe doesn’t tend to see men as inherently privileged. I gotta go out and work all day while my woman gets to stay home and play with the kids, how is that privilege? My experience with homophobia is that it’s something more instinctive and primal.
Have you ever seen a teenager caught in a lie, stuck halfway between guilt and denial? They get angry in an attempt to deflect the guilt on to someone else. No I didn’t take money out of your wallet, how dare you? I’m not a bad person, you’re a bad person for thinking I’m a bad person. Homophobia, to me, seems like the same kind of angry denial. A transgender man doesn’t make a “straight” man think sexual thoughts. A gay woman may provoke sexual thoughts, but those are “normal” and may be freely admitted. But a gay man, an effeminate man, a beautiful transgender woman and there it is, sexual thoughts that must be denied. Guilt and denial that must be deflected outwards. No I’m not attracted to you, how dare you? I can’t reconcile the thoughts in my head and it’s not my fault, it’s yours.
Gender binary is a lie that must be maintained, and gay or transgender men are a personal accusation in a way that no woman can be. Homophobia is the hot, guilty denial of an embarrassed child.
A lot of people just seem threatened by the idea of male genitals, especially in any context where they aren’t “expected.”
Yes and no I think. There are a lot of self loathing “wide stance” conservatives/repubs etc…, but I suspect that there are also a lot who are simply horrible people. They were raised in a deeply religious family or culture where gay or trans is “the devil’s work”, an unforgiveable sin, that must be fought against. It may not be their personal battle, but a larger cultural one. And it’s a battle that they’re not strong enough to make their own judgement on (because that would cast their eternal soul into hell, so sayeth that fancy guy behind the podium).
I think that’s why you fairly frequently see people who rationalize their liking an individual with phrases like “well, he’s not like other gays”, or “I’ve known him for ages, and he’s ok” etc… while at the same time condemning homosexuality or whatever… Love the sinner hate the sin eh?
Makes sense. There’s even a whole genre of porn called “trap” that features effeminate males dressed as women.
The whole “trap” idea is that you can’t tell they aren’t “female” until you see the penis.
“I swear I’m totally not into curvy boys with with delicate features and round butts! It was a trap! This boner is completely non-consensual!”
What a strange turn this cycling tour has taken! Mr. Gulliver appears to have lost his memory. And far from being interested in safer food, is now convinced that he is Clodagh Rogers, the young girl singer. I am taking him for medical attention.
