How difficult would this scenario have been:
Deputy: ma’am. Your card is expired.
Woman: I know I really should renew it.
Deputy: you should. And it really isn’t much effort.
Woman: you’re right.
Deputy: ma’am. I’ll Be back at the end of next week to check in on the card. Please have it renewed by then. Ok?
Woman: yes deputy. I will.
Deputy: if you can’t get a ride over there to renew it. Cal the sheriffs office. I’ll bring you there myself. Ok?
Woman: thank you officer. That’s a kind offer
Deputy: ma’am. It’s no problem. We are here to help.

It’s a scenario where the deputy is a reasonable person. Everyone should be a reasonable person. Reasonable people should not be fucking unicorns.

Clare County, you elected this sheriff, hopefully you don’t forget about this incident in 2020 when you go to the polls. Unless, of course, you enjoy your tax dollars being spent to harass elderly residents for no tangible benefit to the community.

People self-select into their jobs, and reasonable people are unlikely to choose to become cops. Probably much more so today than a few decades ago.

Because authoritarianism is more important that good sense and proper judgement. Honestly, the defense of the arrest is more troubling to me than the arrest itself. This tells us that this department will do the same thing given the same circumstances.
